Monument in Enslaved Persons Section of Arlington’s Old Burying Ground

Arlington, MA

The Arlington Historical Society erected a granite monument to acknowledge the persons of color who are buried in the segregated section of Arlington’s Old Burying Ground. The cemetery is the resting place for several patriots and British soldiers killed during the Battle of Menotomy, but the burial sites for persons of color were often unmarked. This historical society project promotes racial justice, diversity, and inclusion through a physical marker that recognizes the burial ground’s history and acknowledges all of Arlington’s persons of color. The cenotaph was dedicated during the Town’s Juneteenth commemorations in 2023.

This project was made possible in part with support from the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area Partnership Grants Program.
