Arlington’s Old Burying Ground

Pleasant Street, Arlington, MA

The Old Burying Ground near Arlington center was established in 1732. While there are many interesting graves located in this burial ground, the centerpiece is a nineteen-foot-tall obelisk honoring those killed in Menotomy (Arlington) on the first day of the American Revolution, April 19, 1775. This includes Jason Russell, who died defending his house, and eleven other patriots who were originally buried in a mass grave. A number of British soldiers were also buried near the cemetery — the site of their originally unmarked grave is now adorned with a British flag.

The list of 28 known Patriots buried there is as follows:

John Adams • Joseph Adams • William Adams • Elijah Allen • John Bacon • Ammi Cutter Sr • Gershom Cutter III • Samuel Cutter Sr • William Cutter • Ephraim Frost Sr • Ephraim Frost • John Frost (1754-1818) • John Frost (1760-1812) • Samuel Frost • John Hill • Thomas Hill • William Hill • Amos Locke • Jonathan Parker • Solomon Peirce/Pierce • Benjamin Pierce/Peirce • Jason Russell Sr • Philip/Philemon Russell • Walter Russell • Don Juan/John Stoughton • Jonathan Teel • Jeduthan Wellington • Samuel Whittemore

This list was compiled from the SAR Patriot Research System. While our own research has identified discrepancies between various resources, we welcome your feedback should you notice something that should be revised.
