Come join us for a tour of Ayer’s historic Sandy Pond Schoolhouse. A National Register property and Ayer’s oldest public building, Sandy Pond Schoolhouse celebrates its 158th year in 2026. This free community-wide event will provide visitors with an opportunity to tour the restored schoolhouse, to hear talks on local history, take a sample 19th century high school admission test, try their hand at Spencerian Script (19th century handwriting), and learn more about 19th century single room school days and teaching techniques.
With the recent completion of restoration work Sandy Pond Schoolhouse is ready for visitors. New features include painstakingly hand restored windows, an accessible washroom with hot and cold running water, an accessible entrance, and more. Come see the newly restored schoolhouse and learn about its role in Ayer history. It’s free and a great family event.
