SUMMARY:Declaring Independence: Then & Now – Lexington\, MA
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Independence Day on Saturday\, July 4 at 7:00 PM with Lexington History Museums at the Lexington Depot (13 Depot Square). This special event offers a moment of reflection and renewal on the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in a community central to the Revolutionary story. The program will conclude with a performance by the Lexington Historical Society Colonial Singers and an ice cream social. \nDeclaring Independence: Then & Now brings to life the Declaration of Independence as a forum for civic dialogue and engagement through a forty-minute performance and ensuing moderated community conversation. The script\, written by public historian Mary B. Fuhrer\, utilizes primary source material researched by citizen historians to reveal how individuals within Massachusetts towns debated and responded to the question of independence in the spring and summer of 1776\, followed by an annotated reading of the Declaration itself. \nIn commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, 15 community-hosted performances are scheduled across the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area during the spring and summer of 2026. Find a performance near you! \nDeclaring Independence: Then & Now is supported\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati

SUMMARY:Nym Cooke: Leading Lexingtonian
DESCRIPTION:Lexington has heroes in every century\, as change-seekers have made their mark on the town. Through building community\, working for social change\, pioneering in their fields\, and pursuing creative passions\, Leading Lexingtonians keep Lexington on the map as a historic place. This lecture series highlights their accomplishments\, which are also displayed on a rotating basis in the Lexington Depot Museum.\n\nNym Cooke is a music historian\, choral conductor\, and former film and theater director. One of his first projects in the theatrical world broke barriers and made a lasting impact on the community. In the summer of 1967\, as a high school senior\, he produced and co-directed a film\, titled Doublecross. Collaborating with 57 other Lexington High School students\, Cooke helped to conceptualize\, fund\, produce\, film\, and edit this 38-minute silent mobster film. The only adult involvement was from musician Ernest Stires\, who composed the film’s musical score. Today\, participants still get together for Doublecross reunions\, exchanging fond memories of this formative experience. Cooke is passionate about bringing people together\, believing that projects like Doublecross create “little worlds” that exist apart from everything else. In those moments\, all that matters is the people working together towards a shared creative goal.\n\nJoin us in welcoming Nym Cooke and Doublecross alumni for a discussion and celebration of his career and the Doublecross project.\n\n$10 LHM members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:Book Chat on The Men Who Lost America by Andrew Jackson O'Shaughnessy
DESCRIPTION:Stereotypes about the British military during the American Revolution are countless\, and often contradictory. Did England possess the most professional fighting force in the world\, or did they bumble through New England\, clinging tightly to outdated tactics while shrewd farmers rewrote the rules around them? Historian Andrew O’Shaughnessy untangles this web by following several prominent British leaders\, including George III himself\, to reveal the real competence\, as well as the human folly\, of the Crown and its representatives. Join us for a lively discussion\, lead by British military reenactor and historian Paul O’Shaughnessy\, on The Men Who Lost America.\n\nReading Into History: Book Chats is a series of informal discussions of historical topics inspired by nonfiction history books\, and led by authors\, historians\, and local history enthusiasts. All are welcome; reading the book is not required\, but will enhance the experience!\n\n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers\n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n This event explores our region’s revolutionary past! DESCRIPTION:This dramatic presentation\, created by Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area\, aims to find out how our local towns read and reacted to the Declaration of Independence. \nAcross the colonies\, and particularly in Massachusetts\, towns debated what freedom meant to them\, and grappled with the grievances aired in the official Declaration. SUMMARY:Pride Month Lecture: Longfellow Legacies
DESCRIPTION:When most people—especially in Lexington—hear the name Henry Wadsworth Longfellow today\, they probably think of his 1860 poem\, “Paul Revere’s Ride.” But what about the man behind the famous verses? In his personal life\, Longfellow was surrounded by people we would today consider members of the LGBTQ+ community\, including friends\, siblings\, children\, and grandchildren. For this special Pride Month presentation\, public historian Meaghan Michel will explore LGBTQ+ history through three generations of the Longfellow family. Join us and learn how queer people in the 19th and early 20th centuries faced hardships\, found love and acceptance\, and made their mark on history.\n\nMeaghan Michel is an independent historian with a B.A. in Public History from Suffolk University\, and a decade of experience as a ranger at the National Parks of Boston\, including four years at Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters National Historic site. She is currently a guide with HubTown Tours and a volunteer at The History Project.\n\nThis event brought to you in partnership with LexPride!\n\n$10 Lexington History Museums members\, $15 nonmembers\n\nEventBrite registrants are automatically enrolled in the Lexington History Museums weekly newsletter.

SUMMARY:Reading Into History: Book Chat on Ida B. The Queen
DESCRIPTION:Ida B. Wells committed herself to the needs of those who did not have power. In the eyes of the FBI\, this made her a “dangerous negro agitator.” In the annals of history\, it makes her an icon. Ida B. the Queen tells the awe-inspiring story of an pioneering woman who was often overlooked and underestimated—a woman who refused to exit a train car meant for white passengers; a woman brought to light the horrors of lynching in America; a woman who cofounded the NAACP. Written by Wells’s great-granddaughter Michelle Duster\, this “warm remembrance of a civil rights icon” (Kirkus Reviews) is a unique visual celebration of Wells’s life\, and of the Black experience.\nJoin us for an interactive discussion on this fascinating historical figure\, led by a Lexington Historical Society Book Chat member. Reading the book is encouraged but by no means required! Refreshments will be served; doors open at 6:30.\n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:John Quincy Adams: Reluctant Abolitionist
DESCRIPTION:As a Harvard alumnus\, diplomat\, U.S. President\, member of Congress and attorney before the Supreme Court\, John Quincy Adams had a unique relationship with slavery. Prickly and curmudgeonly\, he danced with abolitionists\, but never became one himself. However\, Adams did harbor an intense hatred for the arguments of Southern slaveholders\, and eventually found himself in the center of America’s greatest struggle.\nInformed by Adams’ revealing and often tormented musings from his vast diary\, hear from local historian Jeffrey Denman as he weaves a unique and gripping account of John Quincy Adams’ battle with slavery\, while exploring the many fault lines in American society that led to the Civil War. Included are the dramatic showdowns in the House of Representatives and Supreme Court\, as well as Adams’ attempts at outsmarting Southern politicians and his efforts to keep slavery at the forefront of Congressional activities.\nCopies of Denman’s new book\, John Quincy Adams: Reluctant Abolitionist\, will be available for sale.\n$10 Lexington Historical Society members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:Declaring Independence: Then & Now
DESCRIPTION:This dramatic presentation\, created by Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area\, aims to find out how our local towns read and reacted to the Declaration of Independence. Across the colonies\, and particularly in Massachusetts\, towns debated what freedom meant to them\, and grappled with the grievances aired in the official Declaration. What did the words in the final document mean to them? \nCostumed reenactors will bring life to the words of the past\, with narration by former State Representative Jay Kaufman. Rounding out our evening will be a performance by the Lexington Historical Society Colonial Singers. Some of our favorite tunes from the 18th century were highly political\, and many of them were also taken from popular English military music! And\, as always\, don’t forget your free Hoodsie cup on the way out!
