SUMMARY:Reframe: Sculpture at the Old Schwamb Mill
DESCRIPTION:ReFrame brings together the work of Adria Arch\, Olivia Baldwin\, Tory Fair\, Anna Kristina Göransson\, and Kate Holcomb Hale\, five artists with deep ties to Arlington whose practices share a restless relationship with sculptural convention. SUMMARY:“Driven By Abstraction” - Monday Art Collective Closes Summer Exhibition at the Old Schwamb Mill
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 22\, from 2:00–3:30 PM\, visitors are invited to enjoy one last opportunity to experience this vibrant exhibition of contemporary art in the Mill’s historic second-floor galleries. Showcasing painting\, drawing\, printmaking\, collage\, and mixed media\, Driven by Abstraction highlights the creativity and diverse artistic voices of the Monday Art Collective\, a group of Boston-area artists brought together through a shared commitment to experimentation\, collaboration\, and mutual support. \nThe Monday Art Collective is a group of dedicated visual artists\, primarily based in the Boston area\, who have met weekly for the past four years to create art\, exchange ideas\, and support one another’s artistic growth. Originally brought together through workshops led by Cambridge artist Alexandra Sheldon\, the group continued meeting virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic after studio classes could no longer be held in person. What began as a way to combat artistic isolation soon evolved into a lasting creative community. \nOver time\, the Collective’s artistic practices have expanded beyond the collage work that initially connected many of its members. Today\, the group explores a wide range of media\, including painting\, drawing\, printmaking\, and mixed media. The exhibition at the Old Schwamb Mill reflects this diversity of approach while highlighting the shared spirit of experimentation\, collaboration\, and encouragement that defines the Collective. \nVisitors to the exhibition will encounter a thoughtful and varied collection of contemporary works created by eight women artists whose practices continue to evolve through dialogue\, friendship\, and mutual inspiration. \nMill Hours: Tuesday and Saturday\, 10 am-4 pm. Open for guided tours of our living history museum; viewing of the exhibition in our second-floor galleries; and sales of our custom-made\, museum quality\, oval and circular picture and mirror frames. Admission is free\, with a suggested donation of $5. \nThe Old Schwamb Mill\,  \n17 Mill Lane\, Arlington\, MA\, 02476 \n781-643-0554 \nwww.oldschwambmill.org

SUMMARY:Lou Jones’ panAFRICAproject Comes to the Old Schwamb Mill
DESCRIPTION:The Old Schwamb Mill is proud to host the panAFRICAproject\, a compelling photography exhibition by Boston-based photographer Lou Jones. On view from March 21 through May 16\, the exhibition opens with a public reception at 2:00 PM on March 21 and concludes with a closing talk and event at 2:00 PM on May 16. \nMore than a decade in the making\, panAFRICAproject is a country-by-country visual documentary that challenges long-standing stereotypes and reframes how Africa is understood in the Western imagination. Rather than focusing on narratives of conflict and poverty\, Jones turns his lens toward the vibrancy\, innovation\, and everyday realities of contemporary African life\, highlighting industry\, education\, healthcare\, sports\, music\, and infrastructure across the continent. The project has grown into an expansive visual archive and educational platform\, exhibited in schools\, galleries\, museums\, and public spaces. With a long-term goal of documenting all 54 African countries\, the project continues to evolve as a celebration of culture\, progress\, and daily life. \nHosting panAFRICAproject at the Old Schwamb Mill places these global stories within a site deeply rooted in craft\, labor\, and community history. As a living industrial museum\, the mill provides a unique setting where photography\, history\, and contemporary dialogue intersect. The exhibition also serves as a community gathering point\, welcoming visitors of all ages. Lou Jones puts together a powerful photography exhibition reimagining how Africa is seen\, and bringing global stories into a historic local space.

SUMMARY:The Road Where It Happened: Revolution Comes to Menotomy
DESCRIPTION:How did prehistoric geological forces create the landscape of Menotomy? Did the narrow corridor of Battle Road between steep hillsides at the Foot of the Rocks influence the outcome of the American Revolution? Who were the people of Menotomy who played a role on that critical day of April 19\, 1775? \nThese are some of the questions explored in this exhibit. \nBattle Road was the route traversed by some 2\,000 British regulars marching to Concord and back again on April 19\, 1775\, sparking the start of the American Revolution. More than 3\,000 colonists from Menotomy and nearby towns also gathered along the road to fight for independence from British attempts to impose greater control over the colonies. \nKnown today as Massachusetts Avenue\, the road to revolution travels through Cambridge\, Arlington (Menotomy)\, and Lexington on the way to Concord. The region’s Semiquincentennial (250th) commemoration of the initial battles in 1775 seeks to re-examine that history and the particular role that the people and the landscape of Menotomy played in the founding of America. \nDATE: Tuesdays & Saturdays through May 31st \nTIME: 10 AM – 4 PM\nThe last tour of the day is available at 3 pm. \nLOCATION: Old Schwamb Mill\, 17 Mill Lane\, Arlington\, MA 02476 \nThis program is offered by the Old Schwamb Mill as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area.
SUMMARY:Frame-Making in the Schwamb Mill’s Business Years
DESCRIPTION:This talk will focus on the frame-making business of the Old Schwamb Mill as it introduces the audience to the history of the Mill and its production process. \nIn 1847\, Charles Schwamb arrived in Boston from Germany and began making oval frames. By 1864\, he had his own frame factory in what is now the Old Schwamb Mill in Arlington\, Massachusetts. In 1904\, his grandchildren\, Clinton and Louis Schwamb\, took charge of the business\, running it as The Clinton W. Schwamb Company\, Inc.\, until Clinton’s son Elmer Schwamb retired in 1969. \nIn 1905\, as Clinton and Louis worked to revive the family business\, there were only four to six regular workers\, including the engineer minding the steam engine. Yet they produced just under 6\,000 frames that year. Their output quickly grew to tens of thousands of frames annually\, an astonishing number when it is remembered that they also produced moulding and other items. The Mill produced finished frames of every type – round\, square\, octagonal\, fan-shaped\, panels and spandrels – not simply ovals. \nThe Old Schwamb Mill continues to produce hand-turned oval and circular frames to this day and offers tours on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm. \n  \nThis program is offered by Old Schwamb Mill as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area.
