The Townsend Historical Society is working to preserve and revitalize its historic Spaulding Cooperage, which has been at the heart of the town’s industrial history since the 18th century. Today, the building houses a small business featuring local artisans and crafters, and is a frequent destination for school field trips. With guidance from the Massachusetts historical architecture firm The Preservation Collaborative, the historical society refreshed the Cooperage’s trim, clapboard, and paint. It also made necessary repairs to ensure the structure’s stability, due to its location overhanging the Squannacook River. In doing so, the historical society met its goals of environmental conservation as well as historical preservation, community outreach, and benefits for local businesses
