A new mileage marker plaque, installed by the Clinton Greenway Conservation Trust, will explain the purpose of the 1903 granite pillar along the Clinton section of the Mass Central Railroad pathway. The plaque details how engineers would use these pillars and their markings (i.e “B36” and “N68”) to gauge speed, time to destination, and to mark track repairs. The Conservation Trust has repainted the plaque to the historical standards of the Mass Central Railroad. Not only will this visual nod add to the character of the rail trail, but the plaque will also help the public learn about and interpret the region’s railroad history.
