Born in Lancaster, Massachusetts, Hannah Flagg Gould (1789-1865) wrote eleven volumes of poetry and Gathered Leaves, a volume of short prose, during her career. Close to her father, she moved with him to Newburyport, Massachusetts, as a companion upon her mother’s death. His service in the Revolutionary War inspired several of her pieces, including “The Scar of Lexington,” “The Revolutionary Soldier’s Request,” and “The Veteran and the Child.” Gould’s poetry, written primarily for children, embraced both domestic themes and the natural world; she was one of two women of her time to publish a piece on geology.
