The first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, Amelia Earhart (1897-1939) was the author of best-selling books and instrumental in the formation of an organization for female pilots, The Ninety Nines. Early in her career, she worked in Boston as a teacher and social worker while living in Medford, Massachusetts where a plaque dedicated to her memory reads, “Amelia Earhart: The Famed Flyer Lived Here From 1925 Until She Left To Make The First Transatlantic Flight By A Woman on July 17, 1928. Here She Wrote The Poem ‘Courage.’” On July 2, 1937, Earhart disappeared on a round-the-world flight.
