{"id":17629,"date":"2023-04-19T16:53:29","date_gmt":"2023-04-19T16:53:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/staging\/6553\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=17629"},"modified":"2023-04-19T16:53:29","modified_gmt":"2023-04-19T16:53:29","slug":"why-was-a-childs-shoe-hidden-in-the-wall-of-a-house-for-300-years","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/staging\/6553\/event\/why-was-a-childs-shoe-hidden-in-the-wall-of-a-house-for-300-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Was a Child&#8217;s Shoe Hidden in the Wall of a House for 300 Years?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Join Duncan Brown, Curator for the Boxborough Historical Society, as he explains the story of why a child\u2019s shoe was hidden in the wall of a <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/staging\/6553\/communities\/boxborough\/\">Boxborough<\/a> house for 300 years and the journey the shoe took to come home to the Boxborough Museum.<\/p>\n<p>The house, owned by James and Hannah Whitcomb, was built in 1721 in a portion of <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomsway.org\/staging\/6553\/communities\/harvard\/\">Harvard<\/a> later incorporated into Boxborough in 1783. During renovations in the 1950s, the small shoe was discovered within a wall in the oldest part of the house. Concealed shoes have a long history throughout Europe and in early <span class=\"searchHighlight\">New<\/span> England homes and a single child\u2019s shoe was commonly used.<\/p>\n<p>The presentation will take place in the Morse Hilberg Room of the Boxborough Town Hall at 29 Middle Road starting at 1:00 pm. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PARKING &amp; ACCESS:<\/strong> Parking is available around Town Hall or at UCC Congregational Church directly across the street.
