SUMMARY:Film Premiere: Ellen Garrison: Scenes from an Activist’s Life
DESCRIPTION:June 8\, 2024\, from 3-5PM\, The Umbrella Arts Center in historic Concord\, MA hosts the world premiere screening of Ellen Garrison: Scenes from an Activist Life\, directed by Jennifer Burton and Ursula Burton and produced by Five Sisters Productions and Julie Dobrow\, with the Tufts Production Team. \nIn 1835\, 12-year-old Ellen Garrison marched in the Concord bicentennial parade\, the only person of color to participate\, launching her into a life of civil rights activism. The film highlights key moments in Garrison’s career\, from the parade to her teaching in the South after the Civil War\, to her challenging segregation in a Baltimore trail station waiting room in 1866\, a century before Rosa Parks. \nThe film emerges as the town’s Concord 250 committee has sought to plan an expansive and inclusive commemoration of its history and role at the start of the American Revolution\, and the semiquincentennial of “the shot heard round the world” coming up on April 19\, 2025. \nThe short film will be followed by a behind-the-scenes mini-documentary and an interactive discussion with members of the filmmaking team\, Concord 250\, and The Robbins House. \nThis event is free\, family friendly\, and open to all\, with RSVP at https://TheUmbrellaArts.org/Ellen \nThe Umbrella is ADA accessible\, and provides free parking and free admission to its visual arts galleries.

SUMMARY:The Full Monty
DESCRIPTION:The Umbrella Stage Company presents the beloved\, raucous\, pop-rock-musical send-up of gender expectations and stereotypes… that takes it all off! April 26-May 19 \nBased on the cult hit film of the same name\, The Full Monty is a ten-time Tony-nominated Americanized adaptation that’s filled with honest affection\, engaging melodies\, a ton of humor…and the most highly anticipated closing number of any show! \nWhile spying on their wives at a “Girls’ Night Out\,” a group of unemployed steelworkers from Buffalo sees how much they enjoy watching male strippers. Jealous\, out of work and feeling emasculated\, the men come up with a bold and unclothed way to make some quick cash. In preparing\, they find themselves extremely exposed; not merely physically but emotionally. As they conquer their fears\, self-consciousness and prejudices\, the men come to discover that they’re stronger as a group\, and the strength that they find in each other gives them the individual courage to “let it go.” Right to the end\, audiences will be wondering if these lovable misfits will really pull it off.  \nConceived by the powerhouse team of Terrence McNally (Ragtime) and David Yazbek (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) with a raucous mix of razor-sharp humor and toe-tapping pizzazz\, this heartwarming\, upbeat comedy features an ensemble cast of some of Boston’s favorite actors directed for The Umbrella Stage Company by multi-Elliot Norton Award winner Leigh Barrett. \nSelect performances will feature additional audience engagement opportunities including: Optional Thursday-night Dinner & A Show Packages\, post-show Talk Backs\, and childcare for parents interested in attending the May 5 matinee through The Umbrella’s Kid Care program. \nThe Umbrella is ADA accessible\, a proud partner in the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s EBT Card-to-Culture program\, and provides free parking and free admission to its visual arts galleries. \nThis show is Rated R and contains strong language\, adult themes\, attempted self-harm\, and brief nudity. Audience members should use their judgment about attendance. \nSee https://TheUmbrellaArts.org/Monty for more information.

SUMMARY:The Minutes
DESCRIPTION:An evening in Big Cherry – a small town in anywhere\, USA – and the city council meeting unfolds in real time\, unmasking undercurrents that threaten to undo life as they know it … and driving the question\, “How far would you go?” \nAward-winning playwright Tracy Letts’s (August: Osage County) new play was called one of the most thrilling on Broadway in recent years. Nominated as Best New Play by the Tony Awards and Outer Critics Circle in 2022\, and for the Pulitzer Prize in drama\, The Minutes is part biting comedy\, part Hitchockian mystery\, and at its dark heart an unflinching allegory about small-town politics and real-world power. \n“…both a political comedy and a wicked\, methodically plotted horror show… It’s devilishly funny until it’s not. It is thrilling and essential theater …”  – Variety \n“It’s an important play\, a visceral theatrical experience about what has happened to retail American democracy and how this nation decides which stories about itself it wants to believe.”  – NY Daily News \nStudent\, Senior\, and Group pricing available. \nClick here to visit The Umbrella’s website for show schedule.

SUMMARY:Portraits in Red: Missing & Murdered Indigenous Painting Project
DESCRIPTION:The MMIP Painting Project began not as a project at all but with the intent of it being just one painting to show support for the Missing & Murdered indigenous peoples crisis. Artist Nayana laFond created the first painting on May 5\, 2020\, the day of remembrance for MMIP. She shared it online and the response was so overwhelming she did one more\, yet again intending that to be the end. The response to the second was even more and so Nayana opened her inbox to anyone wanting to be painted not expecting the 25+ the received the first day.Stories and images of loved ones missing\, murdered\, survivors and advocates/activists. It was then that it became a project when Nayana decided to paint them all and they didn’t stop coming. As of February 2024 there is now 110 completed paintings and a constant queue. \nThe paintings are done in black and white with red being the only color visible because many indigenous groups believe red is the only color spirits can see. The hand over the mouths symbolizes being silenced. \nNayana  is a domestic violence survivor and feels compelled to do this work to raise awareness and promote change and healing. The paintings are done for free and Nayana does not profit monetarily  from the creation or sale of these works. She donates any profits to the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center (NIWRC.org). In lieu of taking monetary donations\, she asks people to donate to any of the many organizations working with families and toward change.

SUMMARY:Lizzie: The Musical
DESCRIPTION:*By popular demand\, an additional performance has been added on Sunday\, November 5 at 6:30pm. An additional post-show talkback has been added after the Friday\, November 3 performance with author\, lawyer and Lizzie Borden expert\, Cara Robertson.* \nThe subject of centuries-old\, sing-song villainy\, Lizzie Borden turns searing rock anthem anti-hero and has audiences raging in their seats. \nLizzie was famously acquitted and yet the question lingers… did she do it? Now\, as the story is retold by four women defying musical theater stereotypes\, fronting a six-piece rock band\, and delivering a score that epitomizes riot grrrl power\, Lizzie finally gets her say. \nNominated for three Drama Desk awards and named best musical eight times over in regional awards around the country and the world\, this musical is totally whack (in a good way)! \nThe production is helmed by Ilyse Robbins\, and features Sophia Muharram\, Liza Giangrande\, Nora Sullivan\, Temma Beaudreau\, Stephanie Barney\, and Eleni Kontzamanys. \n“Presented with wall-rattling glee…deliciously watchable!” – The New York Times \n“Take a pure American gothic tale that grabbed the headlines in a small New England town in 1892 and quickly went on to become a cause celebre across the nation. Set it to a volcanic\, quasi-operatic punk rock beat that captures the sense of female rage\, retribution and betrayal\, and feels custom-made for the current climate. And then just let it roar.” – Chicago Sun Times

SUMMARY:Banned
DESCRIPTION:Narrative Paintings by Maryam Safajoo\nOctober 5 – November 19\, 2023\nSaturday\, October 7\, 5-7pm: Opening reception with Artist Talk at 6pm \nOn display at The Umbrella’s second floor Outside-the-Box Gallery\, “Banned” features paintings by Maryam Safajoo narrating the stories of the contemporary situation of the systematically persecuted Iranian Baha’i community – Iran’s largest religious minority – after the 1979 Iranian revolution. \nArtist’s Statement\n“My paintings narrate the stories of the contemporary situation of the systematically persecuted Iranian Baha’i community – Iran’s largest religious minority – after the 1979 Iranian revolution. Many of the incidents I depict only exist in the memory of those who experienced them and have no pictorial existence. In many cases if visual records did exist\, they have been confiscated by the Iranian authorities in raids of homes. My depictions are often the first time these events have taken visual form. I record the details of this history. For example\, the shoes\, clothes\, artifacts\, and environments seen in my paintings are very close to those that were there in the event.”

SUMMARY:Art as Activism/Healing: Race and Racial Justice
DESCRIPTION:A Free Community Exhibition and Workshop Series with Artist Nayda A. Cuevas\nJoin artist Nayda A. Cuevas and see how she uses her art on a gallery wall to create a dialogue about race/identity. In a safe and welcoming space\, students will learn and discuss how other artists stand up to racial injustice and confront such issues as colonialism\, stereotypes\, slavery\, racism\, patriarchy\, apartheid\, and erasure of indigenous peoples and then create their own artwork to be exhibited at The Umbrella Arts Center in April 2023. \nNayda will give a small presentation about different BIPOC figures and contemporary artists. As a group we will answer and discuss the questions below:\n—How can I be visible in my community? Or how may a person of color feel invisible in their community?\n—Has there been a time that you wished you could change something at home\, school\, or in your neighborhood?\n—What artwork would you make to envision and create change?\n—What kind of artwork would you make that shows who you are?
