SUMMARY:Patriots' Day Spirit at the Faulkner Homestead
DESCRIPTION:Travel back in time from 1 to 3:30 p.m. to learn why we celebrate Patriots’ Day in Acton as the start of both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.  What better place to do it than at the home of Col. Francis Faulkner\, Middlesex Regiment commander in 1775\, and Col. Winthrop E. Faulkner\, Acton’s leader on the home front during the Civil War?  Come talk to groups of re-enactors from both time periods\, and witness a skirmish or two in the Faulkner woods!  Members of the Nashoba Valley Weavers’ Guild will also be on hand to demonstrate colonial weaving on the old “barn frame” loom. \nCome back at 5:00 to see the arrival of the Acton Minutemen and the alarm rider bringing the news of the British marching on Concord on April 19\, 1775. \nPatriots’ Day Spirit is open to the public for a modest donation—“Give What You Will.”  Parking is available on nearby public lots.

SUMMARY:Jones Tavern and Faulkner Homestead open house
DESCRIPTION:The Iron Work Farm’s two historic South Acton house museums will be open for visitors. \nThe 1732 Jones Tavern\, 128 Main Street\, open from 1 to 3:00 p.m.\, was the home of several generations of the Samuel Jones family\, who operated local mills and businesses\, including a 1750 tavern and store. \nThe 1707 Jones/Faulkner Homestead at 5 High Street\, the oldest building in Acton\, will be open from 3 to 5:00 p.m.  For nearly 200 years it was the home of the owners of the mills that operated across the street at the dam on Fort Pond Brook.

SUMMARY:Massachusetts Bay Colony Tercentenary Sign at the Faulkner Homestead
DESCRIPTION:This program will highlight the 1930 Tercentenary marker for the Faulkner Homestead\, one of three cast-iron signs in Acton erected to mark the 300th anniversary of the 1630 establishment of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. An interesting aspect of this sign is its inaccuracy\, including the date given for the 1707 Jones-Faulkner House. \nGiven that the marker is located outdoors\, close to the street\, in addition to the presentation on May 28 it is available for viewing by the public at any time\, and will be a highlight in self-guided tours of the Faulkner property and the area around the intersection of Main and High Streets. \n  \nThis program is offered by Iron Work Farm as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:Patriots' Day Spirit 2023
DESCRIPTION:A Living History of the Colonial and Civil War eras \nOn Sunday\, April 16\, the Iron Work Farm will explore the full meaning of Patriots’ Day\, which was established to commemorate the start of not one\, but two wars in our country’s history.  In both wars\, the people of Acton and the Faulkner Homestead played an important part. \nBeginning at 1:00 p.m.\, three groups of re-enactors will be on hand to mark the April 19\, 1861 start of the Civil War.  Soldiers of the 28th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and the 12th Georgia Infantry will stage an encampment and hold skirmishes in the Faulkner woods\, while members of “Be What Remains”\, the re-enactors of the US Sanitary Commission\, will demonstrate the help they gave to the enlisted soldiers during the war. A musical ensemble\, the “Shades of Gray” will be on hand to perform mid-19th century tunes. \nOn April 19\, 1775\, on the first day of the Revolutionary War\, local families gathered in the Faulkner dooryard to cook food to take to the Acton militiamen in the field.  Visitors will experience 18th-century home life with outdoor cooking\, children’s games\, etc.\, while in the Faulkner House\, members of the Nashoba Valley Weavers Guild will demonstrate colonial weaving\, and show off the old “barn frame” loom. \nAt the end of the afternoon\, at about 5:30 the Acton Minutemen will stage their annual “Robbins’ Ride” reenactment—the arrival of the horse and rider who brought the news to Col. Francis Faulkner earlier that day that the British were marching on Concord. \nPatriots’ Day Spirit is open to the public for a modest donation—“Give What You Will”.  Parking is available in the nearby public lots. \nImage courtesy of Iron Work Farm

SUMMARY:Patriots' Day Spirit 2022
DESCRIPTION:Join Iron Work Farm for a fun and activity filled Patriots’ Day Spirit celebration. \nCome travel back in time with us to learn why we celebrate Patriots’ Day in Acton as the start of both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. What better place to do it than at the Faulkner Homestead\, the home of Col. Francis Faulkner in 1775\, and Col. Winthrop E. Faulkner in 1861! \nThe annual Patriots Day Spirit at the Faulkner Homestead shows why Patriots’ Day commemorates both events. We welcome all to this family-friendly event. \nCostumed re-enactors from two different centuries will take part. On April 19\, 1775\, colonial families waited in the Faulkner dooryard for news of their militiamen. Today’s visitors will experience 18th-century home life with outdoor cooking\, children’s games\, crafts\, etc. \nAdvancing to 1861\, to mark the start of the Civil War\, reenactment groups from both the North and South will be encamped on the hillside. If weather permits\, they will also stage a skirmish or two in the Faulkner Woods. \nPatriots Day Spirit is open to the public for a modest donation—“Give What You Will.” Parking is available nearby. \nCheck out photos from previous years. View a video from our Patriots Day Spirit 2013. \nImage courtesy of Iron Work Farm

SUMMARY:Robbins' Ride Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:Join the Acton Minutemen as they commemorate the heroic ride of the thirteen year old son of Captain Joseph Robbins\, one of Acton’s militia leaders\, in the early morning hours of April 19th\, 1775. Click here to learn more about this story! \nCeremonies and fire musket vollies are held at each of the four stops\, and at the Faulkner Homestead in South Acton\, Faulkner himself stumbles out in his nightclothes and manages (hopefully) to fire his musket 3 times to spread the alarm to his troops\, whereupon the volley is echoed by another musket some distance away\, followed by yet another even further off\, demonstrating how the alarm was spread across town. \nPlease  join us for this annual event held on the Sunday of Patriots’ Day weekend! Here is the preliminary schedule of the stops the rider makes: \n5:00 pm at the Robbins’ Homesite – soccer fields at bottom of Concord Road \n5:20 at the Isaac Davis Homestead – 39 Hayward Road \n5:40 at the Faulkner Homestead – 5 High Street in So. Acton (corner of Rte. 27) \n5:55 at the Liberty Tree Farm – 24 Liberty Street\, also in So. Acton \nImage courtesy of Anne Forbes\, Iron Work Farm
