Prince Estabrook (c. 1740-1830) was an enslaved person who lived in Lexington. At dawn on April 19, 1775, he was one of the Lexington militia men awaiting the arrival of the British Regulars at Buckman Tavern. In the battle that followed, Estabrook was wounded on Lexington Green. Through circumstance and destiny, he thus became the first Black soldier to fight in the American Revolution.
This monument, located near Buckman Tavern, is dedicated to the memory of Prince Estabrook and the thousands of other courageous Patriots of Color long denied the recognition they deserve. It was erected in 2008 courtesy of a donation from the Alice M. Hinkle Memorial Fund.
