Groton’s historic Old Burying Ground has interred over 3,000 townspeople since 1678. Its earliest wooden markers — including the graves of twenty colonists who died in a 1694 Abenaki raid — no longer exist, but headstones date back to 1704. At least 37 Revolutionary War Patriots are buried here, including Sarah Hartwell Shattuck, who served as the lieutenant for Prudence Cummings Wright when the townswomen captured a British informant at Jewett’s Bridge. Other Patriots are buried at the nearby Groton Cemetery.
