SUMMARY:Declaring Independence: Then & Now
DESCRIPTION:This dramatic presentation\, created by Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area\, aims to find out how our local towns read and reacted to the Declaration of Independence. \nAcross the colonies\, and particularly in Massachusetts\, towns debated what freedom meant to them\, and grappled with the grievances aired in the official Declaration. What did the words in the final document mean to them? Costumed reenactors will bring life to the words of the past\, with narration by former State Representative Jay Kaufman. \nRounding out our evening will be a performance by the Lexington Historical Society Colonial Singers. Some of our favorite tunes from the 18th century were highly political\, and many of them were also taken from popular English military music!

SUMMARY:Acton 250: Hosmer House Open House
DESCRIPTION:The Hosmer House\, a saltbox style building\, is something of a unique structure. The original portion built in 1760 has gunstock corner posts. By 1796\, when the addition was constructed\, they were no longer popular. The original 1760 fireplace has an interior beehive oven located on the left whereas the 1796 fireplace has an oven to the right\, more appropriate for the times. There is another oven on the left also with a separate flue likely constructed at a later date. The whole fireplace rests on a massive foundation which extends to the front of the house. \nThe Hosmer’s were an early Acton family\, serving the town from its beginning. Jonathan Hosmer (1712-1775) was a selectman and town clerk for many years as well as one of the first Deacons of Acton’s church. Jonathan Hosmer (1734-1822)\, like his father\, was a brick mason and farmer. Jonathan married Submit Hunt (1737-1812) in 1760 and built the Hosmer House. Seven children were born to the family of Jonathan and Submit Hosmer. Their eldest\, Jonathan\, died in service in Bennington in 1777. (His younger brother\, Abner\, was killed at the North Bridge in Concord\, April 19\, 1775.) In addition to the large family\, from at least the time of the 1790 census\, Quartus\, a “Black man” according to his death record and a non-white free person according to census records\, lived in the house until he died in 1827. \nThe Hosmer House has many more surprises . SUMMARY:Annual Gathering 2024: Thoreau & Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Annual Gathering 2024 website for full description\, additional details\, and registration. \nIn spite of a lifetime riven by illness and environmental change during an era marred by racial oppression and political turmoil\, Thoreau once wrote\, “Surely joy is the condition of life.” Even in his darkest hours\, Thoreau found resilience. He turned from the depths of mourning to the healing rhythms of the natural world\,  from the desperation of capitalism to the simple labor of the bean-field and the beauty of Walden’s shore\, and from the cynical\, brutal politics of the day to the wonder of children and the work of justice. \nThis year\, the Annual Gathering will examine Thoreau and resilience writ large—nature’s resilience\, Thoreau’s pursuit of cultural and political resilience\, the resilient individual who was Thoreau\, and the resilience of Thoreau’s legacy in our own times. \nThe conference will address the following themes: \n• the ecological (presentations might consider Thoreau and biodiversity\, sustainability\, climate change\, agriculture\, water\, etc.); \n• the cultural/political (presentations might consider reform/activist efforts\, resistance\, social justice\, race\, disability\, adaptability\, etc.); \n• the personal/spiritual (presentations might consider health and illness\, psychology\, spirituality\, family\, community\, self-reliance\, etc.); and \n• the legacy (presentations might consider the resilience of Thoreau’s legacy in our own times).

SUMMARY:Westford 250 - The Solemn League and Covenant and Westford's Response to the 1774 Intolerable Acts
DESCRIPTION:In the spring and summer of 1774\, news had reached Boston that Britain’s Parliament had invoked several measures in retaliation for the Destruction of the Tea in Boston Harbor\, known as the “Intolerable Acts”. Samuel Adams and the Boston committee of correspondence developed a non-importation pledge known as the “Solemn League and Covenant”. The Covenant called for its signers to halt the purchase of British goods after August 31st. Westford was one of a small number of towns that supported the pledge. \nJoin Dan Lacroix as he looks at the history behind the document\, Westford’s original copy\, and the wide range of men who signed their names to the pledge and how they set Westford apart from other Massachusetts towns. \nDan Lacroix is a student of Westford’s 18th century history and webmaster of “westford1775.org“\, a resource for Westford’s Revolutionary period history. \nWhat is Westford 250?  In 2025 the nation will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary War. Join the Westford Museum and Historical Society as we explore Westford’s history in the American Revolution and related stories.

SUMMARY:Connecting Communities: Walks & Talks — "How We Remember" at Minute Man NHP
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we continue Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area’s 2024 Connecting Communities: Walks & Talks program with a Concord’s North Bridge: History & Memory tour hosted by Minute Man National Historical Park. \nAt 11:00 a.m. meet a Park Ranger at the benches by the North Bridge for this 30 minute program. Learn about the momentous battle at Concord’s North Bridge\, where the British Army suffered its first casualties of the war\, and the legacy of this event in American History. \nThe program meets at the eastern bank of Concord’s North Bridge which is around 400 feet from the North Bridge parking lot located along Monument Street. There is a crosswalk connecting the bridge trail to the parking lot. The program can be accessed via a wide dirt walking trail. The trail is leveled and has a slight slope leading down to the bridge. There are sitting bench options both at the program location and located along the trail. Some program guides may move from one side of the bridge to the other (east to west). The bridge itself is roughly 140 Feet long and slightly arched. There are limited sitting benches on the opposite (west) side of the bridge \nFor more information about all of the Park’s events and programs\, visit their website at https://www.nps.gov/mima/planyourvisit/calendar.htm \nImage courtesy of Minute Man National Historical Park \n===\nThis walking tour is featured in the 2024 Connecting Communities: Walks & Talks series\, “How We Remember.” Connecting Communities: Walks & Talks is part of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area’s larger interpretive strategy which aims to provide life-long learning opportunities to residents and visitors\, connecting them to local landscapes while raising awareness of and inspiring support for conservation and preservation initiatives in the region. \nThis year’s thematic focus is inspired by our semiquincentennial initiative\, How We Remember: A Survey of Revolutionary War Monuments\, Memorials and Markers within the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. The series explores the ways in which people and events of the Revolutionary War period are commemorated in various towns’ landscapes while sharing fascinating stories behind how and why these commemorative objects came to be.
