SUMMARY:Film Premiere: Ellen Garrison: Scenes from an Activist’s Life
DESCRIPTION:June 8\, 2024\, from 3-5PM\, The Umbrella Arts Center in historic Concord\, MA hosts the world premiere screening of Ellen Garrison: Scenes from an Activist Life\, directed by Jennifer Burton and Ursula Burton and produced by Five Sisters Productions and Julie Dobrow\, with the Tufts Production Team. \nIn 1835\, 12-year-old Ellen Garrison marched in the Concord bicentennial parade\, the only person of color to participate\, launching her into a life of civil rights activism. The film highlights key moments in Garrison’s career\, from the parade to her teaching in the South after the Civil War\, to her challenging segregation in a Baltimore trail station waiting room in 1866\, a century before Rosa Parks. \nThe film emerges as the town’s Concord 250 committee has sought to plan an expansive and inclusive commemoration of its history and role at the start of the American Revolution\, and the semiquincentennial of “the shot heard round the world” coming up on April 19\, 2025. \nThe short film will be followed by a behind-the-scenes mini-documentary and an interactive discussion with members of the filmmaking team\, Concord 250\, and The Robbins House. \nThis event is free\, family friendly\, and open to all\, with RSVP at https://TheUmbrellaArts.org/Ellen \nThe Umbrella is ADA accessible\, and provides free parking and free admission to its visual arts galleries.

SUMMARY:The "Real" Miss Rumphius
DESCRIPTION:Readers young and old have embraced Barbara Cooney’s Miss Rumphius\, about the lupine lady who made the world more beautiful\, since its publication four decades ago. \nHarry & Hilda: Letters Home\, The Sparkling Life of the Lupine Lady and the Professor Who Made It Possible is the story of the “real” Miss Rumphius\, Hilda Edwards\, a headstrong English girl who came to America to live with her stern and brilliant uncle\, Smith College philosophy professor Harry N. Gardiner. Near the end of a long life that sparkles through a century of change\, Hilda Edwards Hamlin\, the girl who loved flowers\, becomes Maine’s legendary Hilda Lupina. \nAuthor Jennifer Hamlin Church – granddaughter of the “real” Miss Rumphius! – will speak on the evolution of the lupine lady as well as her labor of love on this book\, which chronicles more than a century of life on both sides of the Atlantic—from two world wars and Hemingway’s Paris to the start of the space age. Based on the wealth of written words they left behind\, Harry & Hilda: Letters Home brings to light the remarkable lives and times of two unforgettable immigrant Americans. \nBarbara Cooney\, beloved children’s author and illustrator\, was a Pepperell resident from 1946 to 1988. As the Lawrence Library in Pepperell was featured in her popular picture book\, Miss Rumphius\, we are delighted to partner with the Lawrence Library (lawrencelibrary.org) for this special event! \nThis event will be held at the Lawrence Library at 15 Main St.\, Pepperell MA. \nREGISTRATION REQUIRED.

SUMMARY:Connecting Communities: Walks & Talks — "How We Remember" in Lexington
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we continue Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area’s 2024 Connecting Communities: Walks & Talks program with a Lexington Celebrates! Walking Tour hosted by the Lexington Historical Society. \nSpace is limited to 20 people. Registration is required.\nClick here to reserve your spot.\n \nParades\, pageants and pandemonium have defined the many commemorations of the 1775 Battle of Lexington and the first shots of the War for Independence. Over the centuries\, thousands of people have descended upon the Battle Green to welcome Revolutionary War heroes like the Marquis de Lafayette on his tour of America in 1824. The anniversaries of the battle offered them a glimpse of President Grant in 1875 and a word from President Ford in 1975. On this land\, protestors have sat and monuments have been built to the fallen. Join a Lexington Historical Society educator as they illuminate 250 years of stories full of crowds\, chaos and celebrations! \nThis FREE walking tour is offered by the Lexington Historical Society. Starting and ending at Buckman Tavern\, it explores areas around the Lexington Battle Green. The tour is 1 hour long and covers about a 1/2 mile on flat ground. \nFor more information about all of the Lexington Historical Society’s events and programs\, visit their website at www.lexingtonhistory.org/events \nImage of the 1875 Battle of Lexington Centennial Parade provided courtesy of the Lexington Historical Society Archives. \n===\nThis walking tour is featured in the 2024 Connecting Communities: Walks & Talks series\, “How We Remember.” Connecting Communities: Walks & Talks is part of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area’s larger interpretive strategy which aims to provide life-long learning opportunities to residents and visitors\, connecting them to local landscapes while raising awareness of and inspiring support for conservation and preservation initiatives in the region. \nThis year’s thematic focus is inspired by our semiquincentennial initiative\, How We Remember: A Survey of Revolutionary War Monuments\, Memorials and Markers within the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. The series explores the ways in which people and events of the Revolutionary War period are commemorated in various towns’ landscapes while sharing fascinating stories behind how and why these commemorative objects came to be.

SUMMARY:Buttrick Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Minute Man National Park for a free 45-minute tour of the Buttrick Gardens. Learn about the history and preservation of these beautiful gardens. We’ll find shady spots to view the historic plantings and discuss why the Buttrick Gardens recently received a Concord Historical Commission Landscape Preservation Award. \nBeginning in 1911\, two generations of the Buttrick family tended and enlarged the formal gardens until 1962\, when the National Park Service purchased the property. Stewards of the land since the colonial period\, the Buttrick family was proud that their gardens stood near the historic muster fields of April 19\, 1775. The eclectic gardens feature viewing terraces\, steps leading down to the Concord River\, elegant wrought ironwork\, and brick\, bluestone\, and cobblestone walkways. Framed by ornamental trees and shrubs\, the garden beds contain the Buttrick family’s award-winning iris and daylilies\, colorful spring bulbs\, and perennials that bloom from spring to fall. \nTours are rain or shine so bring an umbrella if needed! However\, in the case of thunderstorms\, we may need to reschedule or stop a tour. Accessible parking and bathrooms are available. We will walk on grass\, brick pathways\, walk on some uneven terrain. \nREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED for this free event.\n \nLOCATION: Buttrick Gardens\, Minute Man National Historical Park\, 174 Liberty Street\, Concord\, MA 01742 \nThe Buttrick Garden Tour are sponsored by Friends of Minute Man\, Minute Man National Historical Park\, and Middlesex Savings Bank.
