SUMMARY:The Full Monty
DESCRIPTION:The Umbrella Stage Company presents the beloved\, raucous\, pop-rock-musical send-up of gender expectations and stereotypes… that takes it all off! April 26-May 19 \nBased on the cult hit film of the same name\, The Full Monty is a ten-time Tony-nominated Americanized adaptation that’s filled with honest affection\, engaging melodies\, a ton of humor…and the most highly anticipated closing number of any show! \nWhile spying on their wives at a “Girls’ Night Out\,” a group of unemployed steelworkers from Buffalo sees how much they enjoy watching male strippers. Jealous\, out of work and feeling emasculated\, the men come up with a bold and unclothed way to make some quick cash. In preparing\, they find themselves extremely exposed; not merely physically but emotionally. As they conquer their fears\, self-consciousness and prejudices\, the men come to discover that they’re stronger as a group\, and the strength that they find in each other gives them the individual courage to “let it go.” Right to the end\, audiences will be wondering if these lovable misfits will really pull it off.  \nConceived by the powerhouse team of Terrence McNally (Ragtime) and David Yazbek (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) with a raucous mix of razor-sharp humor and toe-tapping pizzazz\, this heartwarming\, upbeat comedy features an ensemble cast of some of Boston’s favorite actors directed for The Umbrella Stage Company by multi-Elliot Norton Award winner Leigh Barrett. \nSelect performances will feature additional audience engagement opportunities including: Optional Thursday-night Dinner & A Show Packages\, post-show Talk Backs\, and childcare for parents interested in attending the May 5 matinee through The Umbrella’s Kid Care program. \nThe Umbrella is ADA accessible\, a proud partner in the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s EBT Card-to-Culture program\, and provides free parking and free admission to its visual arts galleries. \nThis show is Rated R and contains strong language\, adult themes\, attempted self-harm\, and brief nudity. Audience members should use their judgment about attendance. \nSee https://TheUmbrellaArts.org/Monty for more information.

SUMMARY:New Hampshire's One-Room Rural Schools: The Romance and the Reality
DESCRIPTION:Hundreds of one-room schools dotted the landscape of New Hampshire a century ago and were the backbone of primary education for generations of children. Revered in literature and lore\, they actually were beset with problems\, some of which are little changed today. The greatest issue was financing the local school and the vast differences between taxing districts in ability to support education. Other concerns included teacher preparation and quality\, curriculum\, discipline\, student achievement and community involvement in the educational process. Steve Taylor explores the lasting legacies of the one-room school and how they echo today. \nRegistration is required. \nImage courtesy of NH Humanities \nThis program is offered by the Hollis Social Library as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:Acton: 4000 to 7000 Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:Extending a popular talk archaeologist Kimberley Connors gave last year\, 4000 to 7000 Years Ago focuses specifically on Acton’s archaeological sites from the Middle Archaic period (4000-7000 years before present). The most well-known of these is the Pine Hawk site in South Acton\, but there are several other sites along the Assabet River and its tributaries. \nThis program brings our local landscape alive by looking at why indigenous people were so attracted to this region. Through the artifacts and excavations of local archaeological sites\, people can look beyond the glare of the modern to the contours of the land and understand more about Indigenous people and how they thrived here for millennia. \nMs. Connors will also lead a walk through the Trail through Time a short time later on May 18\, so people can see firsthand some of the landscape and sites described in this lecture. \nThis program is offered in person at the Acton Memorial Library and via Zoom. Registration is required. \n  \nThis program is offered by the Friends of Pine Hawk and Acton Memorial Library as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:Hike Through Mosaic of Glacial Landforms and Ecologies
DESCRIPTION:This event is a guided hike through several conservation parcels that were sculpted by the 2-mile high glacier that covered and then receded from the Northeast tens of thousands of years ago. The resulting kettle ponds\, eskers\, drumlins\, and extensive wetlands in between\, created prime conditions for exceptional biodiversity. These features also made development of the land more impractical and this has allowed many rare or endangered species to survive and even flourish. Part of the hike will show how development can be integrated into the natural environment with good success but will also show areas that have been largely untouched over thousands of years. \nThe trails are suitable for families. Dogs must be on leashes and well-behaved. A waiver form must be signed on the day of the event to participate in the hike. \nPARKING & ACCESS: Please park on Northwoods Rd. near a pond that is a few hundred feet to the west of Nashua Rd. The trails are not accessible. However\, the trails are also moderately easy to walk over in general.
