SUMMARY:i3C | REIMAGINING OUR WORLD
DESCRIPTION:Mar 23 – Apr 21\, 2024 11am-5pm Tue-Sun \nOpening Reception: Sun\, Mar 24\, 2024; 2 – 4 pm \nCuratorial Statement:  \nThe environmental crisis is multifactorial: consumerism\, pollution\, extreme weather\, loss of biodiversity\, and other catastrophes – too complex\, too intertwined\, but above all\, too urgent. A collective problem that requires collective solutions. As individuals\, we wonder\, “How can I contribute to the solution?” \nThe featured eco-minded artists\, members of i3C (inspiring Change for the Climate Crisis) Artists Group and Guests\, respond by working with rejected materials\, such as beach debris\, plastic waste\, or repurposed textiles. They dare to reinvent the life of waste\, transforming these society rejections into reminders of what we need to save.  \nJoin our conversation: change is not only possible but also a necessary and powerful element for critical environmental transformation.

SUMMARY:Countdown to April 19th\, 1775: The Gathering Storm
DESCRIPTION:Noted historian and author J. L. Bell will be speaking on Tuesday\, April 2 at 7:00 PM in Room 204\, Acton Town Hall\, 472 Main Street\, Acton\, MA. Please register for the talk at: http://tinyurl.com/APR–02–Bell\, or use the QR code to the right.  Remote Participation: You can participate in the Q&A using ZOOM http://tinyurl.com/Acton250-ZOOM or watch live at Acton TV http://tinyurl.com/Acton-TV. \nContext: As the year 1774 began\, Massachusetts politicians worried about how the royal government in London would respond to the Boston Tea Party. The force of that reaction became clear in the return of troops to Boston\, the Coerc ive Acts\, and the Massachusetts Government Act. In late summer the province’s people rebelled by shutting down government functions in rural counties\, seizing weapons in ports\, and electing their own legislature. The engine of that resistance was a little-understood institution: the colonial militia. By fall\, it was clear that the new royal governor had no leverage outside Boston. This talk traces the end of British power in most of Massachusetts even before the war began. \nJ. L. Bell has explored the end of British royal government in Massachusetts by following the contest for artillery pieces in his acclaimed book\, The Road to Concord: How Four Stolen Cannon Ignited the Revolutionary War. He also maintains the Boston 1775 blog\, which offers daily helpings of history\, analysis\, and unabashed gossip about Revolutionary New England. \nWe will post a recording shortly after on the Acton 250 website. This is the fourth lecture in a series commissioned by the Acton 250 Committee. Please visit the Acton 250 website https://www.actonma.gov/250 for all event programming. Please consider supporting programming at our commemorative memorabilia site at http://tinyurl.com/Acton-250-Commemorative. \nGenerously supported by the Acton Lions Club.

SUMMARY:Bedford Liberty Pole Capping & Raising Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:Annually\, on a Saturday in early April\, the Bedford Minuteman Company and Minuteman Companies from the area converge on Willson Park in Bedford to commemorate the spirit and courage of the patriots who sparked the American Revolution. \nThe Liberty Pole Capping and Raising is a reenactment of a practice in Colonial America signifying dissatisfaction with varied rulings and conduct of the English government of that date.  It is meant to be commemorative of the spirit of liberty exemplified by Bedfordians and other colonials in the early phases of the War for Independence. \nThe Colonial units from the surrounding area park and unload in the parking area in front of the Bedford High School (9 Mudge Way\, Bedford\, MA 01730) and then form up on the Town Green\, in front of the First Parish Unitarian Church (75 Great Road\, Bedford\, MA 01730). \nThe Town of Bedford Dignitaries assemble\, on the sidewalk\, in front of the Fitch Tavern (12 Great Road\, Bedford\, MA 01730). The Fitch Tavern is the place where the original Bedford Minutemen assembled on the morning of April 19th\, 1775. After the colonial units pass the Fitch Tavern\, on their way to Willson Park (2 Concord Road\, Bedford\, MA 01730)\, the Dignitaries and the Bedford Minutemen follow with the pole.  After a few words\, the pole is erected and capped\, and hopefully this will not attract the attention of any British patrols.  This takes about forty-five minutes or less if the weather cooperates. \nFor more information visit the Bedford Minutemen website. \nPhoto courtesy of the Bedford Minuteman Company

SUMMARY:Lexington Alarm Letter – Annual Viewing
DESCRIPTION:Each year at the time of the Massachusetts Patriots’ Day holiday\, the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library is proud to display the Lexington Alarm letter—one of the documents used to notify the colonies south of Massachusetts that war had begun. The letter will be on view April 9 through April 27\, 2024. The museum is closed on Patriots’ Day and on weekends\, with the exception of April 27. \nCouriers delivered the news of the conflict at Lexington throughout the colonies soon after the event. This alarm letter was written by Joseph Palmer\, a member of the Committee of Safety in Watertown\, a town near Lexington. Recipients duplicated Palmer’s letter several times to carry the news far and wide. Daniel Tyler\, Jr. of Connecticut penned the museum’s copy of Palmer’s letter\, probably on April 20\, 1775. The original Alarm Letter written by Palmer at Watertown is thought to be lost. \nWhat makes this hand-written document such an exciting piece of American history is the urgency with which it was written. As we read the text\, we can sense the shock and concern of its author\, Joseph Palmer. It reads: \nWatertown Wednesday Morning near 10 o’Clock \nTo all the Friends of American Liberty\, be it known that this Morning before breake of Day a Brigade consisting of about 1000 or 1200 Men landed at [David] Phip’s Farm at Cambridge & marched to Lexington where they found a Company of our Colony Militia in Arms\, upon Whom they fired without any Provocation and killed 6 Men and Wounded 4 others. By an Express from Boston this Moment\, we find another Brigade are now upon their march from Boston supposed to be about 1000. […] \nI have spoken with Several Persons who have seen the Dead & Wounded. Pray let the Delegates from this Colony to Connecticut see this they know. \nPalmer wrote the letter 10 a.m.\, only one half-hour after the skirmish at Concord’s North Bridge. The encounter between Lexington’s militia under Capt. John Parker and the force of 700 or so Regular Army soldiers sent out from Boston was much earlier\, at around 4:30 a.m. Palmer had spoken to witnesses of the destruction at Lexington and fears that more unprovoked attacks are to come from the second brigade he learned is on its way from Boston. His letter spreads the news of unfolding events\, the outcome of which he does not yet know. \n  \nImage courtesy of the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library

SUMMARY:Tavern Week
DESCRIPTION:Taverns were gathering places for locals and lodgers in colonial times. People could eat\, drink\, and be entertained. Taverns played an important role in Menotomy (now Arlington) in 1775. The Menotomy Committee of Safety met on April 18th at the Black Horse Tavern. They discussed oppressive policies and the movements of the British Regulars. Those members who spent the night heard the Regulars advancing through Menotomy in the early morning of April 19th\, the first day of the American Revolution. \nDuring Tavern Week\, we want to recognize the tavern tradition in Menotomy and encourage our residents and visitors to gather\, eat\, drink\, and be entertained at today’s restaurants. Arlington 250 invites every restaurant in town to become a tavern during Tavern Week! Check back soon for details! \nRead the press release and discover all that’s planned for Patriots’ Day Week in Arlington!

SUMMARY:Stow Minutemen Trail March to Concord
DESCRIPTION:The Stow Minuteman Company will once again march along the 9.5 mile route taken by the Stow colonial militia in April of 1775 upon hearing the news that the British Regulars were marching on Concord. The pre-dawn Trail March muster starts at 4:15am at the Stow Lower Village Shopping Center. The music and marching begins promptly at 4:30am when the air is crisp and all is quiet (but not for long.) The Company will march in step to its own colonial fife and drum music while the sounds of musket volleys raise the alarm with the townsfolk along the way. At around 9:00am the Trail March will end at the Minuteman National Park North Bridge Visitors Center where the Company will join Concord’s Parade. This annual Stow Minutemen Company Trail March is a rain or shine event. \nPlease come out and join us in this truly unique experience to honor our community (past and present) on Patriots’ Day. Non-Company participants (children MUST be accompanied and supervised by an adult) may fall in behind the Company column for the march at their own discretion. [The Stow Minutemen do not actively organize\, supervise\, or chaperone non-Company marchers so the participation liability rests solely with the participant.] We encourage all non-Company marchers to bring water and snacks. There are three short breaks along the route with an extended breakfast break at the Rideout Playground in Concord (7:00am). Limited bus transportation may be available back to Stow after the Concord parade but please contact us if you desire to use that option. \nClick for schedule and more information. \nPhoto courtesy of Russ Campbell/Stow Minutemen

SUMMARY:Col. John Robinson Trail March
DESCRIPTION:The Westford Colonial Minutemen invite everyone to make the march with us this coming Patriots’ Day (Monday\, April 15th) to help commemorate the march of 1775. We will meet at the Westford town common by 4:45AM so that we can step off shortly thereafter. Visit this page as the date approaches for possible updates. \nIf you wish to participate in all or part of the trail march\, and don’t want to walk all the way back\, please make sure that you arrange for a return ride from Concord! \nWear comfortable walking shoes\, bring adequate water and snacks\, and wear clothing appropriate for the morning’s weather. The commemorative walk will occur rain or shine (well\, unless it’s really raining!). Note that historical clothing is not necessary to participate\, simply an interest in the experience! \nQuestions? Contact us Here \nAbout the Trail\nThe Col. John Robinson Historic Trail marks the route of Westford’s minute and militia companies during their march to Concord on the morning of April 19th\, 1775. Once informed of the alarm\, Lt. Col. Robinson set off for Concord by horseback from his home on present day Robinson Rd.  He and several others from Westford arrived in time to participate in the provincial response to the expedition of the British regulars. The remainder of the militia marched to the North Bridge\, arriving shortly after the battle. Some portion of them continued onward throughout the day\, harassing the regulars along the Battle Road until they reached Cambridge. \nToday\, members of the Westford Colonial Minutemen welcome all who are interested in retracing the steps of Westford’s first Revolutionary War soldiers. The trail is traditionally walked by members of our community prior to the Concord Parade\, which is typically on Patriots’ Day. The 10 mile march starts shortly after 4:45AM and can be completed by approximately 8:00-9:00AM depending on the pace. \nPhoto courtesy of the Westford Colonial Minutemen

SUMMARY:Isaac Davis Trail March
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, on the Monday of Patriots’ Day weekend\, the Acton Minutemen recreate the famous march to Concord over the remnants of the original trail that Captain Isaac Davis and his men traveled on that fateful day\, referred to by stone markers labeled “Line of March\, April 19\, 1775”. Click here to learn more about this story. \nWe start off at the Isaac Davis homestead at 39 Hayward Rd. in Acton at 5:50am\, where we hold a short ceremony of remembrance. From there\, we head to Acton Center\, arriving about 6:20am at the monument where Isaac Davis\, Abner Hosmer\, and James Hayward are buried\, and have another short remembrance ceremony. From there we march to Concord over the original route (as closely as possible)\, arriving at the Old North Bridge about 9:00\, where we will reenact the original battle that took place there\, along with British reenactor units. \nThe public is encouraged to join us as we march the trail from Acton to Concord. It is an experience that you and your family will never forget. Join in the history\, in the fun\, and in the tradition. Make this event a regular tradition in your family and keep the “life” in living history!! \nImage courtesy of jrcovert via Wikimedia Commons

SUMMARY:Patriots' Day Dawn Tribute
DESCRIPTION:The Dawn Tribute is a moving and public ceremony designed more recently to commemorate the Revolutionary Patriots buried next to Bemis Hall. The Dawn Tribute is a brief but dramatic ceremony. As the Patriot roll is called\, soldiers reply from the graveyard and come join the ranks. A fifer plays a lament; a soldier fires a commemorative volley. The Company then begins its march to Concord\, stopping along the way at Dakin Field for another memorial fifers’ lament and musket volley. \nImage courtesy of Andrew Sylvia/Wicked Local
