SUMMARY:Portraits in Red: Missing & Murdered Indigenous Painting Project
DESCRIPTION:The MMIP Painting Project began not as a project at all but with the intent of it being just one painting to show support for the Missing & Murdered indigenous peoples crisis. Artist Nayana laFond created the first painting on May 5\, 2020\, the day of remembrance for MMIP. She shared it online and the response was so overwhelming she did one more\, yet again intending that to be the end. The response to the second was even more and so Nayana opened her inbox to anyone wanting to be painted not expecting the 25+ the received the first day.Stories and images of loved ones missing\, murdered\, survivors and advocates/activists. It was then that it became a project when Nayana decided to paint them all and they didn’t stop coming. As of February 2024 there is now 110 completed paintings and a constant queue. \nThe paintings are done in black and white with red being the only color visible because many indigenous groups believe red is the only color spirits can see. The hand over the mouths symbolizes being silenced. \nNayana  is a domestic violence survivor and feels compelled to do this work to raise awareness and promote change and healing. The paintings are done for free and Nayana does not profit monetarily  from the creation or sale of these works. She donates any profits to the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center (NIWRC.org). In lieu of taking monetary donations\, she asks people to donate to any of the many organizations working with families and toward change.

SUMMARY:The Minutes
DESCRIPTION:An evening in Big Cherry – a small town in anywhere\, USA – and the city council meeting unfolds in real time\, unmasking undercurrents that threaten to undo life as they know it … and driving the question\, “How far would you go?” \nAward-winning playwright Tracy Letts’s (August: Osage County) new play was called one of the most thrilling on Broadway in recent years. Nominated as Best New Play by the Tony Awards and Outer Critics Circle in 2022\, and for the Pulitzer Prize in drama\, The Minutes is part biting comedy\, part Hitchockian mystery\, and at its dark heart an unflinching allegory about small-town politics and real-world power. \n“…both a political comedy and a wicked\, methodically plotted horror show… It’s devilishly funny until it’s not. It is thrilling and essential theater …”  – Variety \n“It’s an important play\, a visceral theatrical experience about what has happened to retail American democracy and how this nation decides which stories about itself it wants to believe.”  – NY Daily News \nStudent\, Senior\, and Group pricing available. \nClick here to visit The Umbrella’s website for show schedule.

SUMMARY:Westford 250—Who Was Your Revolutionary War Ancestor? with Bob Oliphant
DESCRIPTION:Did my Ancestor Serve in the American Revolution?\nBoys as young as 16 were allowed to serve\, so any male ancestors who were between the ages of 16 and 50 between 1776 and 1783 were potential candidates. Those who didn’t serve directly in a military capacity may have helped in other ways – by providing goods\, supplies or non-military service to the cause. Women also participated in the American Revolution\, some even accompanying their husbands to battle. \nIf you have an ancestor you believe may have served in the American Revolution\, then Bob Oliphant has tips to help you get started \nRobert “Bob” Oliphant is a local historian of Westford\, but he was not always on that path. He is originally from Oberlin\, Ohio\, and went to college to study metallurgy and materials science. It was while in college that he discovered his passion for genealogy\, the study of tracing lineages. Eight years after graduating from college\, he moved to Westford\, where he and his wife\, Bonnie\, raised their three sons. Since then\, Oliphant has been on the Westford Historical Commission on the board of the Westford Museum and Historical Society\, and serves on the town’s Parkerville Schoolhouse Committee and the Records and Archives Management Committee. He has published a history book on Westford\, The Westford Gazetteer. He also does research and writes articles for the Westford Historical Society\, and has written the “Museum Musings” column in the Westford Eagle\, the local weekly newspaper\, since 2008. He is dedicated to studying Westford history and serving the town in doing so \nSuggested Program donation $10 per person \nWestford 250-In 2025 the nation will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary War. Join the Westford Museum and Historical Society as we explore Westford’s history in the American Revolution and related stories……..

SUMMARY:The Ammo Dump: A Taking of Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Come join us at the Sudbury Historical Society for an exciting in-person event! The Ammo Dump\, A Taking of Heritage is and insightful book about the history of eminent domain of families in Maynard\, Stow\, Sudbury\, and Hudson. Join the authors for a presentation about the book\, a Q&A session\, and a book signing. \nThe book explores the who\, how\, and why of the close-knit families in Maynard\, Stow\, Sudbury\, and Hudson\, Massachusetts\, who lost their farms\, their livelihoods when the Federal Government took their land in 1942 for the construction of an ammunition dump. Upended\, they not only had to find new places to live and to work – if they could – they had to deal with the loss of all they had built. Their heritage was taken. \nThe land’s history will be detailed from the earliest days of settlement to what happened during and after World War I. A silver lining is a new\, promising future of the land with the creation of the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge. By the end\, you’ll have delved deep into an area simply called by many as The Ammo Dump. \nTickets are $5 for non members in person\, and $2.50 for virtual. Use Code ‘Member’ to get a membership discount (100% off). Sign up at eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Blight: Author Emily Monosson in Conversation with Brent Ranalli
DESCRIPTION:Emily Monosson’s book Blight: Fungi and the Coming Pandemic is a prescient warning about the mysterious and deadly world of fungi—and how to avert further loss across species\, including our own. \nFungi are everywhere. Most are harmless; some are helpful. A few are killers. Collectively\, infectious fungi are the most devastating agents of disease on earth\, and a fungus that can persist in the environment without its host is here to stay. In Blight\, Emily Monosson documents how trade\, travel\, and a changing climate are making us all more vulnerable to invasion. Populations of bats\, frogs\, and salamanders face extinction. In the Northwest\, America’s beloved national parks are covered with the spindly corpses of whitebark pines. Food crops are under siege\, threatening our coffee\, bananas\, and wheat—and\, more broadly\, our global food security. Candida auris\, drug-resistant and resilient\, infects hospital patients and those with weakened immune systems. Coccidioides\, which lives in drier dusty regions\, may cause infection in apparently healthy people. The horrors go on. \nYet prevention is not impossible. Tracing the history of fungal spread and the most recent discoveries in the field\, Monosson meets scientists who are working tirelessly to protect species under threat\, and whose innovative approaches to fungal invasion have the potential to save human lives. Delving into case studies at once fascinating\, sobering\, and hopeful\, Blight serves as a wake-up call\, a reminder of the delicate interconnectedness of the natural world\, and a lesson in seeing life on our planet with renewed humility and awe. \nEmily Monosson is the author of Natural Defense\, Unnatural Selection\, and Evolution in a Toxic World. She is a member of the Ronin Institute for Independent Scholarship and an adjunct faculty member at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She lives in Montague\, Massachusetts. \nBrent Ranalli in an environmental policy analyst at the Cadmus Group and co-edits Environment: An Interdisciplinary Anthology for Yale University Press. He edits the Thoreau Society Bulletin.

SUMMARY:On Belonging in Outdoor Spaces Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 2024 Spring Session of On Belonging! \nMarch 13th at 7 PM via Zoom | Erika Rumbley\, Co-Founder and Director of The New Garden Society\nErika Rumbley is a Co-Founder and Director of The New Garden Society (TNGS)\, an organization dedicated to training incarcerated students in the art and science of plants. For over a decade\, she has gardened alongside students in Greater Boston prison yards on Monday afternoons. Beyond TNGS\, Erika serves as the Director of Horticulture at The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. She works with a team of 7 horticulturists to care for the Gardner’s living collection and create perpetually blooming displays in the art museum’s central atrium. A greenhouse grower by trade\, Erika is passionate about broadening access to the gifts of the garden and the skills for ecologically sound growing.\nClick here to register. \nMarch 27th at 7 PM via Zoom | Doug Sutherland\, DEIB (Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion\, and Belonging) Consultant\, Keynote Speaker\, and Summer Camp professional\nDoug Sutherland (he/him) is a Black grandson\, son\, brother\, partner\, and father. In addition\, he works as a DEIB (Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion\, and Belonging) Consultant\, Keynote Speaker\, and Summer Camp professional. Since his first camping trip in 1987\, the outdoors has always been a passion. He has introduced the outdoors and environmental education to 3rd graders through high school and beyond. As an ECO-ACT Program Educator at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis MO. (a program original funded by the Desegregation Program)\, he brought together city and county high school students to teach leadership and environmental science to elementary school in the area. Moving to New Hampshire in June of 1999\, Doug continued to follow the path of working with children in the outdoors. Working at 6 different camps and outdoor education center\, Doug learned\, grew\, and honed his skills in the outdoors. As a Black person in rural New Hampshire\, “belonging” is an assumption for some and unattainable for others. An assumption of safety is not actually safe. Also\, it is only unattainable if you choose to not attain it. Doug’s mission as a father and DEIB Consultant is “To Stand Up\, To Speak Up\, and Do Something” and foster and nurture belonging in all spaces\, especially the outdoors.\nClick here to register. \nSpring 2024 sponsorship by:\nFreedom’s Way National Heritage Area\nThe Ogden Codman Trust

SUMMARY:Reading Into History: Book Chat on Ida B. The Queen
DESCRIPTION:Ida B. Wells committed herself to the needs of those who did not have power. In the eyes of the FBI\, this made her a “dangerous negro agitator.” In the annals of history\, it makes her an icon. Ida B. the Queen tells the awe-inspiring story of an pioneering woman who was often overlooked and underestimated—a woman who refused to exit a train car meant for white passengers; a woman brought to light the horrors of lynching in America; a woman who cofounded the NAACP. Written by Wells’s great-granddaughter Michelle Duster\, this “warm remembrance of a civil rights icon” (Kirkus Reviews) is a unique visual celebration of Wells’s life\, and of the Black experience.\nJoin us for an interactive discussion on this fascinating historical figure\, led by a Lexington Historical Society Book Chat member. Reading the book is encouraged but by no means required! Refreshments will be served; doors open at 6:30.\n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:New Hampshire Cemeteries and Gravestones: Granite Women; The Hidden Lives of New Hampshire Women as seen in the Cemetery\, 1674-1992.
DESCRIPTION:Speaker Glenn A. Knoblock will share a story of New Hampshire women throughout our history from all walks of life from the perspective of historic burial grounds and cemeteries located throughout the state. The silent gravestones and monuments within their confines which mark the final resting places of women of many demographics\, speak volumes. By examining the oft-hidden clues they contain\, we can learn much about their place in society and how their status evolved from early Colonial times down through the Victorian era and into the 20th Century. Through the gravestones for these hard-working\, everyday women\, women who made their marks in ways big and small\, we can learn much about our Granite women. \nJoin us for this talk by Glenn Knoblock\, an independent scholar who has authored more than twenty books. \nThis program is free and open to the public.  It has been made possible by New Hampshire Humanities.   For further information on this particular date and location\, please visit https://www.nashuahistoricalsociety.org/events   Our Speare Museum library is comfortable and fully accessible (ramp into the building from our parking lot\, as well as an elevator inside).  Refreshments to follow.  \n

SUMMARY:i3C | REIMAGINING OUR WORLD
DESCRIPTION:Mar 23 – Apr 21\, 2024 11am-5pm Tue-Sun \nOpening Reception: Sun\, Mar 24\, 2024; 2 – 4 pm \nCuratorial Statement:  \nThe environmental crisis is multifactorial: consumerism\, pollution\, extreme weather\, loss of biodiversity\, and other catastrophes – too complex\, too intertwined\, but above all\, too urgent. A collective problem that requires collective solutions. As individuals\, we wonder\, “How can I contribute to the solution?” \nThe featured eco-minded artists\, members of i3C (inspiring Change for the Climate Crisis) Artists Group and Guests\, respond by working with rejected materials\, such as beach debris\, plastic waste\, or repurposed textiles. They dare to reinvent the life of waste\, transforming these society rejections into reminders of what we need to save.  \nJoin our conversation: change is not only possible but also a necessary and powerful element for critical environmental transformation.
