SUMMARY:John Quincy Adams: Reluctant Abolitionist
DESCRIPTION:As a Harvard alumnus\, diplomat\, U.S. President\, member of Congress and attorney before the Supreme Court\, John Quincy Adams had a unique relationship with slavery. Prickly and curmudgeonly\, he danced with abolitionists\, but never became one himself. However\, Adams did harbor an intense hatred for the arguments of Southern slaveholders\, and eventually found himself in the center of America’s greatest struggle.\nInformed by Adams’ revealing and often tormented musings from his vast diary\, hear from local historian Jeffrey Denman as he weaves a unique and gripping account of John Quincy Adams’ battle with slavery\, while exploring the many fault lines in American society that led to the Civil War. Included are the dramatic showdowns in the House of Representatives and Supreme Court\, as well as Adams’ attempts at outsmarting Southern politicians and his efforts to keep slavery at the forefront of Congressional activities.\nCopies of Denman’s new book\, John Quincy Adams: Reluctant Abolitionist\, will be available for sale.\n$10 Lexington Historical Society members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:The Power of Truth: Early Diversity in a Medford Neighborhood
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the Revalyon family\, free Black Bostonians\, who moved their family to Medford in 1828. \nSpeaker and Local Historian Dee Morris will tell us about Thomas (b. 1777) and Margaret (b. 1781) Revalyon\, free Black Bostonians\, who moved their family in 1828 to a new house on Cross Street in Medford. Thomas owned a popular Main Street barber salon while Margaret attended to the household. After growing up amid Yankee ship carpenters\, three of their children married notable partners: Younger Margaret wed a Black abolitionist\, Charlotte married a local West Indian barber\, and Robert became the soul mate of Keziah Gould a Native American descended from Massasoit\, the Wampanoag who befriended the early Pilgrims. Several Revalyons have found eternal rest in the Cross Street Cemetery section of Oak Grove. The story of their lives in Medford demonstrates the historical diversity of our community.

SUMMARY:The Original Bucky Lew with Author Chris Boucher
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Black History Month by learning about Fitchburg’s role in the integration of pro sports. Author Chris Boucher will discuss his new book\, “The Original Bucky Lew\,” in an interactive presentation at the Fitchburg Public Library on February 15 at 6:30 PM. \nLew became basketball’s first Black professional in 1902. And he didn’t stop there. He further defied the segregated Jim Crow era and became the first Black executive and owner of an integrated team in 1915. \nFitchburg was a key station on Lew’s journey. His teams appeared many times at the old Armory\, one of the few places he played that still stands today. And he “played” more than basketball there. In those days of combined basketball and dancing events\, Lew also played violin with the band. He met his wife Florence at the Armory and word is she was more impressed with his musical ability than his basketball skills. \nWhile Lew’s achievements are largely forgotten today\, they were well documented in the newspapers of his day\, and the digitization of those papers is bringing his fame back to light. And although the full integration of sports didn’t happen until a generation after his retirement\, evidence suggests some of the key players involved in that effort were likely inspired by Lew’s incredible success. \nPlease note the Fitchburg Public Library is currently operating out of our temporary location\, at 166 Boulder Drive\, Suite 108\, Fitchburg MA 01420.

SUMMARY:“Huzzah! Drinking with John Hancock during the American Revolution” with Dr. Brooke Barbier
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, February 25\, 2024\n2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.\nConcord Free Public Main Library\nFree and open to the public \nLearn more about the important role of alcohol in the culture and politics of Colonial America in this free lecture with Brook Barbier\, author of King Hancock: The Radical Influence of a Moderate Founding Father (2023). When John Hancock needed to win people over\, he didn’t talk about resisting taxes or policy improvements; instead\, he served alcohol. He offered rum punch and wine at his home and paid for lavish meals in taverns to bring people together. Guests included lower-class men\, French officers\, and Black women and men. By throwing parties\, Hancock gained social and political power among myriad groups\, repeatedly paying dividends. He was consistently elected to political office and when he smuggled Madeira into Boston\, one of the most memorable and violent mobs during colonial resistance defended him. \nBrooke Barbier is a public historian who received her Ph.D. in American history from Boston College\, researching Boston’s social and cultural life during and after the American Revolution. Barbier owns a popular tour company in Boston\, Ye Olde Tavern Tours\, that takes guests to revolutionary sites and inside historic taverns to drink beer. Attendees will receive 10% off on 2024 Ye Olde Tavern Tours. \nRegistration is not required for this in-person event. The lecture will take place in the Goodwin Forum room of the Concord Free Public Main Library at 129 Main Street\, Concord\, MA. Please visit the library webpage for parking and accessibility information. \nThe Winter Lecture Series is co-sponsored by Friends of Minute Man\, Minute Man National Historical Park\, and the Concord Free Public Library. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Concord Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency. \nImage: Green Dragon Tavern\, Boston\, MA. c.1898. SUMMARY:Portraits in Red: Missing & Murdered Indigenous Painting Project
DESCRIPTION:The MMIP Painting Project began not as a project at all but with the intent of it being just one painting to show support for the Missing & Murdered indigenous peoples crisis. Artist Nayana laFond created the first painting on May 5\, 2020\, the day of remembrance for MMIP. She shared it online and the response was so overwhelming she did one more\, yet again intending that to be the end. The response to the second was even more and so Nayana opened her inbox to anyone wanting to be painted not expecting the 25+ the received the first day.Stories and images of loved ones missing\, murdered\, survivors and advocates/activists. It was then that it became a project when Nayana decided to paint them all and they didn’t stop coming. As of February 2024 there is now 110 completed paintings and a constant queue. \nThe paintings are done in black and white with red being the only color visible because many indigenous groups believe red is the only color spirits can see. The hand over the mouths symbolizes being silenced. \nNayana  is a domestic violence survivor and feels compelled to do this work to raise awareness and promote change and healing. The paintings are done for free and Nayana does not profit monetarily  from the creation or sale of these works. She donates any profits to the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center (NIWRC.org). In lieu of taking monetary donations\, she asks people to donate to any of the many organizations working with families and toward change.
