SUMMARY:Open House
DESCRIPTION:Did we really have a Town Moderator who was jailed by the Patriots (not the football team)? Is it true that a local scuba diver would cut a hole in the ice at Lake Potanipo\, go down to the bottom and dig through the mud with his hands for artifacts? What’s this I hear about a Brookline cannon that disappeared after it blew off a man’s arm the day after the town’s centennial celebration in 1869? Is it true that our 1700’s town meeting house mysteriously burned down one night in 1915? What’s the story of the beloved and iconic Florence Barnaby? Do you mean to tell me that Brookline once had train service\, a ski hill\, multiple grocery stores\, a motor speedway\, a town hearse and that Lake Potanipo ice was sold in Boston? \nOn January 20\, 9 AM to 2 PM\, the Brookline Historical Society at 17 Meetinghouse Hill Road will hold an open house for the public. Refreshments will be served. Come and tour the BHS’s Barnaby House and barn. Learn about our town’s colorful heritage.

SUMMARY:Westford 250—The Minutemen and Their World\, An Evening with Robert Gross
DESCRIPTION:On April 19\, 1775\, the American Revolution began at the Old North Bridge in Concord\, Massachusetts. The “shot heard round the world” catapulted this sleepy New England town into the midst of revolutionary fervor\, and Concord went on to become the intellectual capital of the new republic. The town–future home to Emerson\, Thoreau\, and Hawthorne–soon came to symbolize devotion to liberty\, intellectual freedom\, and the stubborn integrity of rural life. In The Minutemen and Their World\, Robert Gross shares a remarkably subtle and detailed reconstruction of the lives and community of this special place\, and a compelling interpretation of the American Revolution as a social movement. \nRobert A. Gross is the James L. and Shirley A. Draper Professor of Early American History Emeritus at the University of Connecticut. He is the author of The Minutemen and Their World (1976)\, which won the Bancroft Prize; Books and Libraries in Thoreau’s Concord (1988); and The Transcendentalists and Their World (2021). With Mary Kelley\, he is the co-editor of An Extensive Republic: Print\, Culture\, and Society in the New Nation\, 1790–1840 (2010). A former assistant editor of Newsweek\, he has written for such periodicals as Esquire\, Harper’s Magazine\, \nSuggested Program donation $10 per person\nYour donation supports the preservation and maintenance of artifacts in the collection of the Westford Museum. SUMMARY:Countdown to April 19\, 1775: “A Revolution in the News” with Historian Joseph Adelman
DESCRIPTION:Professor Adelman will tell the story of the Revolutionary War’s forgotten instigators: newspaper printers and editors. Shrewdly gauging the political climate and interests of their communities and balancing them with their own commercial interests\, eighteenth-century printers were instrumental in creating propaganda and rallying the public to the revolutionary cause. \nPlease register at https://actonmemoriallibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/countdown-to-april-19-1775-a-revolutionin-the-news-with-historian-joseph-adelman/ so that you may be contacted for future activities. You can also watch live on ActonTV (https://www.youtube.com/@ActonTV1/streams) or Zoom at https://actonma.zoom.us/j/81741134640 if you would like to engage in the Q&A portion of the talk. \nProfessor Adelman earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in history from Johns Hopkins University. He currently teaches history at Framingham State University and is the author of Revolutionary Networks: The Business and Politics of Printing the News\, 1763-1789. A noted speaker and author\, he has published work in the Washington Post\, Slate\, and The Atlantic\, is a regular contributor to the award-winning podcast\, Ben Franklin’s World\, and serves as an Associate Editor for The New England Quarterly. \nIf required a “snow date” for this talk has been set for Monday\, February 12\, 2024. There is no charge for this event.
