SUMMARY:Candlelight Vespers – Christmas Reflection
DESCRIPTION:There is faint music in the night\,\nAnd pale wings fanned by silver flight;\nA frosty hill with tender glow\nOf countless stars that shine on snow. – Nancy Buckley \nAt this time of the year we often find ourselves thinking of all our lists of “presents to buy\, things to be done and places to go.” The hustle and bustle of the season can be both daunting and overwhelming. On that note we invite into the peace and tranquility of The Shirley Meeting House on Sunday\, December 3rd for our 20th Annual Candlelight Vespers Concert. The program will feature music\, stories and poems that will give you a moment to pause and reflect on the true meaning of this season and the peace it offers to each of us. \nThe doors will open at 6:00 pm and you are invited in to sit back and enjoy tradition carols performed on our own Stevens Tracker Organ by Lois Toeppner. The Vespers program begins at 6:30 pm. After a few years without a full chorus 2023 will bring back The Meeting House Chorale under the direction of Bernard Crane and accompanied by pianist Elenye German. You will also be a part of the program as we invite you to lift your voice in the singing of some traditional carols. Following the program you are all invited to the Center Town Hall for warm cider\, dessert and time with good friends and family. We look forward to seeing you.

SUMMARY:Deck the Halls: Female Abolitionists and Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, December 11\, 7 pm\nFollen Church Sanctuary\, 755 Massachusetts Avenue\nKen Turino\, Historic New England\nRegister \nNew England’s female abolitionists in the first half of the nineteenth century played a large role in the development of modern American Christmas traditions. These abolitionists\, led by Maria Chapman\, hosted anti-slavery society Christmas Fairs – one of the earliest traditions associated with Christmas. It was at these fairs that most Americans in the first half of the nineteenth century encountered a Christmas tree. These fairs had a wide-ranging influence on our current customs\, including the use of greenery in decorating and gift giving in America. Women\, including Lexington sisters Julia and Ellen Robbins\, promoted abolitionism while creating goods for sale as well as organizing the fairs. This helped move women out of the designated domestic sphere of the home (not without controversy) into the economy. All of this would forever change the role of women in society and how we celebrate Christmas. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Lexington Lyceum Advocates and LexSeeHer. \nQuestions?
