SUMMARY:2023 Art Ramble: Geo-Metric
DESCRIPTION:Art Ramble is an annual\, temporary public art exhibition in the Hapgood Wright Town Forest in Concord\, MA\, a collaboration of The Umbrella Art Center and Concord’s Division of Natural Resources (CDNR). Following Leave No Trace principles\, regional artists create site-specific artworks promoting appreciation of nature\, installed along Fairyland Pond and parts of the historic Emerson-Thoreau Amble connecting Concord Center to Walden Pond. On view September 1- November 19\, 2023\, with Artist Reception & Walkabout Saturday September 9 at 11AM (Rain Date: Sunday\, September 10 at 11AM). \nThe theme of this year’s exhibition is “Geo-Metric” – literally meaning Earth measurement. While traditionally\, basic geometry relies on axioms used to measure fixed shapes and construct solid objects that will stand the test of time\, “Geo-Metric” here refers to the ability to measure change. Our planet is constantly in motion and changes with exposure to light\, temperature\, weather\, human intervention and climate change. The season visibly changes from summer to fall over the run of the Art Ramble\, but what are the changes and patterns (geometric or otherwise) that we do not see? How can we make visible the patterns of nature and their disruption — raising awareness of the threats to our environment as well as nature’s keen ability to adapt and survive? \nThis year’s Art Ramble includes interactive installations as well as quiet\, contemplative sculptures. Several will change over the course of the exhibition as they interact with nature\, visitors\, and the seasons. Be sure to visit The Umbrella’s front lawn to see one additional “Geo-Metric” sculpture.

SUMMARY:Lizzie: The Musical
DESCRIPTION:The subject of centuries-old\, sing-song villainy\, Lizzie Borden turns searing rock anthem anti-hero and has audiences raging in their seats. \nLizzie was famously acquitted and yet the question lingers… did she do it? Now\, as the story is retold by four women defying musical theater stereotypes\, fronting a six-piece rock band\, and delivering a score that epitomizes riot grrrl power\, Lizzie finally gets her say. \nNominated for three Drama Desk awards and named best musical eight times over in regional awards around the country and the world\, this musical is totally whack (in a good way)! \nThe production is helmed by Ilyse Robbins\, and features Sophia Muharram\, Liza Giangrande\, Nora Sullivan\, Temma Beaudreau\, Stephanie Barney\, and Eleni Kontzamanys. \n“Presented with wall-rattling glee…deliciously watchable!” – The New York Times \n“Take a pure American gothic tale that grabbed the headlines in a small New England town in 1892 and quickly went on to become a cause celebre across the nation. Set it to a volcanic\, quasi-operatic punk rock beat that captures the sense of female rage\, retribution and betrayal\, and feels custom-made for the current climate. And then just let it roar.” – Chicago Sun Times

SUMMARY:Banned
DESCRIPTION:Narrative Paintings by Maryam Safajoo\nOctober 5 – November 19\, 2023\nSaturday\, October 7\, 5-7pm: Opening reception with Artist Talk at 6pm \nOn display at The Umbrella’s second floor Outside-the-Box Gallery\, “Banned” features paintings by Maryam Safajoo narrating the stories of the contemporary situation of the systematically persecuted Iranian Baha’i community – Iran’s largest religious minority – after the 1979 Iranian revolution. \nArtist’s Statement\n“My paintings narrate the stories of the contemporary situation of the systematically persecuted Iranian Baha’i community – Iran’s largest religious minority – after the 1979 Iranian revolution. Many of the incidents I depict only exist in the memory of those who experienced them and have no pictorial existence. In many cases if visual records did exist\, they have been confiscated by the Iranian authorities in raids of homes. My depictions are often the first time these events have taken visual form. I record the details of this history. For example\, the shoes\, clothes\, artifacts\, and environments seen in my paintings are very close to those that were there in the event.”

SUMMARY:Indigenous People of Concord Walk
DESCRIPTION:For over 10\,000 years the indigenous people of the land knew this area as Musketaquid\, the land between the grassy rivers. This tour explores the history of the first people and how they lived in a land of abundance seeking to keep and foster balance with the natural world\, their mother\, who sustained them always. What happened when cultures collided after European fur traders came and then English settlers in the 17th century will be discussed as we examine how those events shape the world of the indigenous people of Massachusetts today. \nThis event will take place in Concord and be guided by Amy Cole. Cost is $10 per person. Registration limited to 20. Directions will be emailed to registrants. Register here. \n—\nThe Friends of Pine Hawk 2023 Fall Programs are presented with support from the Acton Memorial Library\, Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area\, and the Littleton Historical Society. \nOnline registration required. \nLink to 2023 Fall Programs flyer (pdf)

SUMMARY:Connecticut's Indigenous Communities: An Introduction
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Lucianne Lavin\, director of research emeritus at the Institute of American Indian Studies. SUMMARY:HOME
DESCRIPTION:October 28- November 19\, 2023 11am-5pm Tue-Sun \n \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, November 2\, 5pm-7pm \nHousing Round Table: November 9\, 5pm-7pm \nLexHAB ‘HOME’ Fundraiser: November 16\, 5pm-7pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nLexHAB\, an affordable housing organization\, and LexArt\, announce an exciting new collaboration that links both missions: an art exhibition\, titled ‘HOME’\, from October 28 through November 19\, 2023 at the Nye Gallery in Lexington\, MA. The show’s submission period is now open to artists in New England working in all media. \nHOME will focus on the theme of ‘home’ and the role of housing in our lives. Whether it is a physical place or an idea\, ‘home’ can mean something different at each stage of life and varies by culture and geography. Housing as shelter is a universal human need that is inaccessible for too many\, locally and globally. \nA shelter is a need\, a house can be a haven\, a nest can be empty\, a home can be inhabitable: climate change\, income inequality\, racism\, violence\, love\, community\, and family are just a few of the factors that impact our concept of home and our ability to attain and maintain a home. We invite you to reflect on this theme and to submit a work of art that shares your perspective on the notion of ‘home’. \n \nCALL FOR ART \n \nSubmission registration and fee click here \n \nFor more information about LexHAB click here \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nJuror: Sarah Morrison\, award-winning artist whose work includes painting\, printmaking and collage. Sarah is the Executive Director of LexHAB and a member of LexArt. \n \nImage: Karla Quattrocchi courtesy of 13Forest Gallery \n
