SUMMARY:Colors of Concord: The Grassy Plain
DESCRIPTION:Colors of Concord: The Grassy Plain features artworks created by Umbrella 2022-2023 Artist-in-Residence\, Ponnapa Prakkamakul.  Following a year of intensive outreach to underrepresented members of the Concord community\, Prakkamakul has created a series of site-specific new artworks inspired by the people and places she discovered there. \nThe work is on view in The Umbrella’s Main Gallery from August 21-September 15\, 2023\, with an Opening Reception and Artist Talk on Sunday\, Aug 27\, 3-5PM. \nPrakkamakul\, who is also currently working on collaborative public art projects in Boston in association with the incubator project Now & There\, says her work explores the relationship between humans and their environment\, focusing on cultural displacement and a sense of belonging. I explore new places using a mixed media painting process as a tool to experience\, understand\, and form connections with my  contacts and surroundings.” She often creates artworks in situ\, with site-specific natural materials and neighborhood input. \nIn her Concord residency\, she delved into the history of the place through field research\, museum visits\, town meetings and walking tours\, and invited people of color and those living with physical disabilities to share stories and feelings about the landscapes that they feel connected to. “I hope this exhibition contributes to helping make Concord more diverse and inclusive\,” says Prakkamakul. \nA multidisciplinary artist with a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design\, Prakkamakul has held past residencies at Mount Auburn Cemetery\, Urbano Project\, Pao Arts Center\, Vermont Studio Center\, and others. She is a member at Kingston Gallery and a registered landscape architect at the interdisciplinary design firm\, Sasaki.

SUMMARY:2023 Art Ramble: Geo-Metric
DESCRIPTION:Art Ramble is an annual\, temporary public art exhibition in the Hapgood Wright Town Forest in Concord\, MA\, a collaboration of The Umbrella Art Center and Concord’s Division of Natural Resources (CDNR). Following Leave No Trace principles\, regional artists create site-specific artworks promoting appreciation of nature\, installed along Fairyland Pond and parts of the historic Emerson-Thoreau Amble connecting Concord Center to Walden Pond. On view September 1- November 19\, 2023\, with Artist Reception & Walkabout Saturday September 9 at 11AM (Rain Date: Sunday\, September 10 at 11AM). \nThe theme of this year’s exhibition is “Geo-Metric” – literally meaning Earth measurement. While traditionally\, basic geometry relies on axioms used to measure fixed shapes and construct solid objects that will stand the test of time\, “Geo-Metric” here refers to the ability to measure change. Our planet is constantly in motion and changes with exposure to light\, temperature\, weather\, human intervention and climate change. The season visibly changes from summer to fall over the run of the Art Ramble\, but what are the changes and patterns (geometric or otherwise) that we do not see? How can we make visible the patterns of nature and their disruption — raising awareness of the threats to our environment as well as nature’s keen ability to adapt and survive? \nThis year’s Art Ramble includes interactive installations as well as quiet\, contemplative sculptures. Several will change over the course of the exhibition as they interact with nature\, visitors\, and the seasons. Be sure to visit The Umbrella’s front lawn to see one additional “Geo-Metric” sculpture.

SUMMARY:Shirley Shaker Village Site Guided Tour
DESCRIPTION:This lovely wooden building was built in the early 19th century by the Believers in the Second Coming of Christ\, commonly known as the Shakers. Until 1908\, they had a village in the southern part of Shirley\, Massachusetts where they lived\, worked\, and worshiped together. The Shirley group was known for the quality of their seeds\, herbs\, mops\, and brooms. They were respected for their kindness to all people and animals. When the community closed in 1908\, their property was sold to the state of Massachusetts to be used as an Industrial School for Boys which evolved into a state prison. \nThis fall\, the Shirley Historical Society\, with the cooperation of the Massachusetts Department of Corrections\, will lead three guided tours of the historic Shaker Village site on Sundays September 17th\, October 8th\, and October 22nd. Starting at 12:30 pm\, visitors meet inside this building for an introductory talk about the Shaker lifestyle and the founding of the Shirley community. They then board a prison van for a tour of the property and go inside two more Shaker buildings. \nReservations must be made and the $20 fee paid in advance at shirleyhistory.org. Contact mail@shirleyhistory.org for more details.

SUMMARY:The Collaged Landscape Jill Pottle: Painting Demo
DESCRIPTION:Time & Location\n\n\nSep 17\, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM \nLexington\, 130 Waltham St\, Lexington\, MA 02421\, USA \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Class or Event\n\n\nJoin us September 17 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm for a demo with Jill Pottle \n  \nCollage is an accessible art form for all levels. But for me it is an extension of my fine arts where I use all the tools of drawing and painting to creating space\, value\, volume in the principles of creating a landscape. I use magazines\, papers\, that I have created and fabrics to create a beautiful landscape. Then I use paints and oil pastel to integrate the material to get the best link between collage and drawing. The immediacy of using a variety of material can be a lot of fun for non artists as well as artists. \n  \nJill M. Pottle is an accomplished artist from Worcester County who exhibits her paintings and drawings locally and nationally. She graduated from Syracuse University with her BFA and received her MFA from the Boston Museum School. Her work is featured in many collections including Danforth Art Museum\, and she has shown in many galleries including The Three Stones Gallery in West Concord\, and the East End Gallery in Provincetown. She is currently a member of the Fountain Street Gallery in Boston and the Trumpet Gallery of Fine Arts in Peterborough\, New Hampshire. Jill has taught art for 38 years. \n  \nThis demo is free to the public and we ask you to please register for the event.

SUMMARY:Lizzie: The Musical
DESCRIPTION:The subject of centuries-old\, sing-song villainy\, Lizzie Borden turns searing rock anthem anti-hero and has audiences raging in their seats. \nLizzie was famously acquitted and yet the question lingers… did she do it? Now\, as the story is retold by four women defying musical theater stereotypes\, fronting a six-piece rock band\, and delivering a score that epitomizes riot grrrl power\, Lizzie finally gets her say. \nNominated for three Drama Desk awards and named best musical eight times over in regional awards around the country and the world\, this musical is totally whack (in a good way)! \nThe production is helmed by Ilyse Robbins\, and features Sophia Muharram\, Liza Giangrande\, Nora Sullivan\, Temma Beaudreau\, Stephanie Barney\, and Eleni Kontzamanys. \n“Presented with wall-rattling glee…deliciously watchable!” – The New York Times \n“Take a pure American gothic tale that grabbed the headlines in a small New England town in 1892 and quickly went on to become a cause celebre across the nation. Set it to a volcanic\, quasi-operatic punk rock beat that captures the sense of female rage\, retribution and betrayal\, and feels custom-made for the current climate. And then just let it roar.” – Chicago Sun Times
