SUMMARY:Amherst Community Reading: "What to the Slave is your Fourth of July?"
DESCRIPTION:On July 5\, 1852\, Frederick Douglass\, an abolitionist and heroic orator for liberty\, delivered one of his most famous speeches in which he asked\, “What to the slave is your Fourth of July?” In addressing an Independence Day observance in Rochester\, New York\, his speech was a blistering indictment of an American idealism that ignored and accepted the inhuman treatment of enslaved African Americans as part of the country’s identity and economy. Ironically\, even though Douglass’ words spoke directly to this moment in history\, they still ring with an unsettling power today. \nFor the past several years\, the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire (BHTNH) has collaborated with community leaders around the Granite State to bring people together to read Douglass’ historic protest speech and to reflect on its meaning. \nWhile reading Frederick Douglass’ work is a powerful experience for many\, it is only one piece of the long-overdue conversations that our communities need to have. We hope that these readings will be a starting point for these difficult dialogues and that they will provide an opportunity for us to engage in deeper conversations that will lead to actions to help build more inclusive and just communities today. \nBHTNH has moved programming to a hybrid model. There are two ways for you to get involved with their annual Frederick Douglass community readings: 1) live in-person at one of the small group gatherings across the state on July 1 at noon\, or 2) watch online via the BHTNH Facebook Page (the live stream will have closed captions).

SUMMARY:Declaring Independence: Then & Now
DESCRIPTION:This dramatic presentation\, created by Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area\, aims to find out how our local towns read and reacted to the Declaration of Independence. Across the colonies\, and particularly in Massachusetts\, towns debated what freedom meant to them\, and grappled with the grievances aired in the official Declaration. What did the words in the final document mean to them? \nCostumed reenactors will bring life to the words of the past\, with narration by former State Representative Jay Kaufman. Rounding out our evening will be a performance by the Lexington Historical Society Colonial Singers. Some of our favorite tunes from the 18th century were highly political\, and many of them were also taken from popular English military music! And\, as always\, don’t forget your free Hoodsie cup on the way out!

Beverly was a feature writer\, then food editor\, and finally syndicated columnist and cookbook author. Her Desperation Dinners series has a quarter million copies in print. He’s long been active in journalism circles\, serving on the board of the Pulitzer Prizes\, Society of Newspaper Editors and Journalism Funding Partners. As their work slowed down\, they started following birds and photographing and writing about them for magazines and newspapers around the country. SUMMARY:Connecting Communities: Walks & Talks — Operation Pollination with Tufts Pollinator Initiative
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the return of Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area’s Connecting Communities: Walks & Talks program after a two-year hiatus! This year’s series titled “Operation Pollination” focuses on native pollination systems specific to the Heritage Area\, highlighting the work of our partners while sharing ways in which you can help these systems thrive. \nDid you know that cities are teeming with biodiversity? Insect pollinators like bees\, butterflies\, and beetles thrive in the city and help to sustain our local food systems and ecosystems. Come explore the flower gardens at Tufts University to learn how ecologically minded garden design can benefit both people and pollinators in the city. Guided by Tufts Pollinator Initiative experts\, we’ll spy charismatic animals like bumble bees\, green metallic sweat bees\, monarch butterflies\, and more! \nTwo Pollinator Safaris led by trained TPI guides will be offered: 9:30-10:30 AM and 11:00 AM-12:00 PM. TPI guides will be available for a Q&A session 15 minutes afterwards. Each walk is FREE to attend\, and registration is limited to 30 people per walk. \nAbout: Tufts Pollinator Initiative works to build capacity for community-led urban pollinator conservation through habitat creation\, nature education\, and ecological research. Founded in 2019\, TPI is run by enthusiastic Tufts University student scientists who are committed to raising awareness and inspiring support for pollinator conservation. Visit https://sites.tufts.edu/pollinators/ to learn more. \nSPACE IS LIMITED; REGISTRATION REQUIRED! Please click here to register for either walk.
