SUMMARY:Points of Return
DESCRIPTION:The Umbrella Visual Arts program\, in collaboration with A La Luz\, presents the revolutionary\, multimedia exhibition\, Points of Return. Featuring the work of 27 international artists\, Points of Return is the first physical exhibition of the acclaimed online exhibition of the same name. \nThis environmental art exhibition sees The Umbrella divided into themed spaces. A journey has been mapped out to allow visitors fresh and engaging insights into wide-ranging aspects of the climate crisis\, its end destination that of resolute optimism. For\, while it may seem that we are racing toward a closing act\, as our planet’s average temperature rises year-on-year\, solutions remain within sight. We have not yet reached that dreaded “point of no return” and artists are in the unique position of being able to offer scientific data in new ways. Through dynamic display and crossing several artistic disciplines\, this show provides commentary\, reflection\, and creative restorative strategies. \nThe exhibition will be on display May 1 – June 25\, over two floors of The Umbrella and in The Umbrella Black Box Theater\, supported by the following special events (RSVPs Required): \nSaturday\, May 6\, 5-8pm – Opening reception. Curator remarks and introduction to artists at 6pm. RSVP \nSunday\, May 7\, 12pm – Guided tour followed by Return to Resonance: Restoring Our Connection to Earth Through Sound\, an immersive sound bath experience to reconnect with our environment. \nSaturday\, May 13\, 3-4pm – Guided Tour of the Exhibition \nSaturday\, May 13\, 4-5pm – “American Literature Before\, Through and After the Climate Emergency”. Talk by Dr. Joseph Donica (CUNY) and presented in partnership with The Thoreau Society. \nSaturday\, June 10\, 3pm – Guided Tour of the Exhibition \nSaturday\, June 10\, 6:30-9pm – Into the Oceanic: Double screening event by artist-filmmakers Elizabeth Ogilvie and Robert Page\, focusing on underwater habitats and the importance of educational entry points in environmental artwork. Documentary screening and pre-recorded talk by Dr Gary Husband from 7:30pm in the main theater\, preceded by a creative oceanic projection in the Black Box and exhibition viewing. Refreshments available for purchase. \nSaturday\, June 25\, 3pm – Guided Tour of the Exhibition \nImage: AnthropoScene IV by Adam Sebire \n

SUMMARY:American Inheritance: A Conversation with Edward Larson
DESCRIPTION:Pulitzer Prize winning author Edward Larson joins us for a conversation on his new book American Inheritance: Liberty and Slavery in the Birth of a Nation\, 1765-1795\, in which he discusses how liberty and slavery were intertwined during the nation’s founding. \nProfessor Larson examines the role of Black Americans during the Revolutionary War and in the many debates over slavery and freedom\, highlighting the voices of Black Americans as the most persuasive in the urgency of liberty. He explores the fateful compromises over slavery that took place during the Constitutional Convention and their disastrous effects in the coming decades. \n“An authoritative contribution to the dismal history of race in America. … Larson\, author of Franklin & Washington\, A Magnificent Catastrophe and other acclaimed books of American history\, recasts the narrative of the nation’s founding by focusing on vociferous debates about liberty that erupted during three crucial decades of revolutionary fervor. … At a time when rebellious colonists proclaimed their refusal to be enslaved by the British\, most saw no contradiction in buying and selling men\, women\, and children. … Larson’s stirring narrative includes the perspectives of free and escaped slaves\, such as James Somerset\, who was brought to England by his owner\, where he successfully sued for his freedom; poet Phillis Wheatley; and Ona Judge\, dower property of Martha Washington\, whose escape incited George Washington’s desperate\, enraged search for her return.” Kirkus Reviews\, October 20\, 2022 \nForums are supported in part by the Sally Lanagan Fund. \nRegister online in advance at https://concordmuseum.org/events/american-inheritance/

DESCRIPTION:Love architecture\, history\, fantastic stories\, great landscapes\, art\, and interior design? Then join Historic New England on June 3 for our region-wide Open House and explore distinctly different historic sites – for free. \nFrom seventeenth-century “stone-enders\,” to a pink Gothic Revival cottage\, coastal farms\, and a mid-century Bauhaus masterpiece\, there is so much to explore. Hear about the people who lived and worked at the sites and enjoy the open spaces\, beautiful gardens\, and farm fields. \nJoin us in New Ipswich\, NH for a look inside the Barrett House!\nKnown as Forest Hall\, Barrett House was built c. 1800 by Charles Barrett Sr. for his son Charles Jr. and daughter-in-law Martha Minot on the occasion of their marriage. Its grand scale was encouraged by Martha’s father\, who promised to furnish the house as lavishly as Barrett Sr. could build it. It features family furnishings\, French scenic wallpaper\, and elegant period finishes. \nThe mansion sits on more than seventy acres that include a Gothic Revival summer house that crowns the hillside overlooking the expansive grounds. Learn about the multiple generations that resided at Barrett House\, their lifestyles\, and the impressive country estate that represents a vanished way of life from a time when New Ipswich was an active mill town. \nFrom Maine to Rhode Island\, plan your visit today to explore our region’s shared history.

SUMMARY:Church of the Wild: A Conversation with Victoria Loorz
DESCRIPTION:Church of the Wild places Thoreau’s intimacy with nature into a community of spiritual practice. With a fresh look at a beloved community larger than our own species\, this book uncovers the wild roots of faith to undergird our commitment to a groaning and glorious earth. Simple practices of sacred reconnection with the land\, waters and creatures of our home places invites us to care for the world by falling in love with it.  It is an invitation to trust the knowing deep within us that we are an important part of an interconnected relationship with All That Is.\n\nVictoria is joined in conversation by Richard Higgins.

SUMMARY:Disunion Among Ourselves: The Perilous Politics of the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Vanderbilt political historian and best-selling author Eli Merritt reveals the deep political divisions that almost tore the Union apart during the American Revolution. Despite their differences\, the nation’s founders united for the sake of liberty and self-preservation\, forging grueling compromises to hold the nation together. Merritt’s book serves as a reminder that commitment to ethical constitutional democracy and compromise helped the founders overcome far tougher times than our own\, and it resonates with our present era of political hyperpolarization and serves as a touchstone for contemporary politics. \n“Eli Merritt deftly explores a revolutionary America rife with divisions and driven by a fear of civil wars on multiple fronts. Deeply researched\, wide-ranging\, and insightful\, Disunion Among Ourselves persuades that our national Union began from\, and still depends on\, fending off the many demons of disunion.”—Alan Taylor\, author of American Revolutions: A Continental History\, 1750-1804 \nThis forum is supported in part by the Sally Lanagan Fund and the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati.
