SUMMARY:Riverwalk 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a trail walk along the beautiful Nashua River that flows out of Wachusett Reservoir and through the Town of Clinton\, Massachusetts. Enjoy flora and fauna along a trail forged by both animal and human walkers of all kinds. Animals spotted on previous walks include hawks\, herons\, turtles\, garter snakes\, deer\, and fox. You get a nice view of what Clintonians call “High Bridge” which is a railroad bridge we will cross under. \nDress for the season: it can be buggy and especially wear tick-proof long pants (slippery nylon works well\, while sweatpants are easy for ticks to cling to).  There is a shorter loop and a longer\, more difficult loop. Allow 1 to 2 hours for the walk. \nThis conservation area is owned by the Town of Clinton and the Commonwealth and is open to the public. If you miss the walk\, you can go any time. A rough trail map is available on our website at clintongreenway.org. \n  \nThis program is offered by the Clinton Greenway Conservation Trust as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:Dedication of the Mill Curfew Bell
DESCRIPTION:The Maynard Curfew Bell was cast in the former Paul Revere Foundry in Boston\, MA\, by Henry Northey Hooper in 1856. It was bought for the Assabet Manufacturing Company and used to remind workers in the mill to be at home and in bed when the bell rang. When the mill closed\, the bell was moved to a local church\, and when the church recently closed\, the bell was moved to the Maynard Public Library. This event will celebrate the bell in its new home. There will be speakers\, refreshments\, and a bell-themed storytime for children. \nPhoto courtesy of Jean Maguire \n  \nThis program is offered by Maynard Public Library and the Maynard Historical Commission as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:Using Ecosystem Principles to Think About Your Gardens and Property
DESCRIPTION:Want to nurture nature in your own backyard but don’t know where to start? In this free outdoor workshop\, Ecological Landscaper Catherine Rooney will use on-site examples from her restoration plan for Fredonian Park\, providing attendees with the know-how to optimize habitat for birds\, pollinators\, and other wildlife. Learn how to select and combine native plants and use natural landscape features on your property to provide resilient habitat throughout all four seasons\, and how to maximize benefit for species at risk. \nCatherine Rooney began working with the Town of Shirley in 2022 to remove invasives and restore the landscape at Fredonian Park and Nature Center\, one of Shirley’s hidden gems that includes a small pond and nature trail along a charming stretch of Catacunemaug Brook. Areas that highlight ecosystem principles discussed in the workshop will be marked with QR codes linking to descriptions so that attendees and other visitors to the park can learn more and follow these highlighted areas throughout the park’s 2023 restoration effort. \nThis program is offered by the Shirley Greenway Committee and Nashua\, Squannacook\, and Nissitissit Rivers Wild & Scenic Stewardship Council as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:Lancaster's Old Common and the Story of Native Son Horace W. S. Cleveland
DESCRIPTION:This colorfully illustrated and highly informative lecture will be presented by Heather Lennon\, President of the Lancaster Historical Society incorporating material researched by LHS Executive Board member\, Karen Silverthorn. \nAbout 375 years ago\, the nearby Wattaquadock hills provided a gateway for early settlers of the Nashaway Plantation. The “Bay Path” was a trail used by Native traders and early settlers to travel from coastal settlements to what was then the western frontier of north central Massachusetts. \nIn the early eighteenth century\, a new generation of Lancastrians settled east of the Nashua River and the “Old Common” area became a lively center of town activity. In the early nineteenth century\, a small colony of residents from Salem\, Massachusetts inhabited the area with Dorcas Cleveland establishing the Lancaster Academy based upon “cutting edge” educational theories of the day. In the 1870s\, her son\, noted landscape designed Horace W. S. Cleveland\, returned to his birthplace to design Lancaster’s Eastwood Cemetery\, demonstrating a respect for nature that he had absorbed early in his education. \nIn 1854\, the Lancaster Industrial School for Girls was established as one of the most progressive correctional institutions for women of its day. After the school shut down in the early 1970s\, the campus was divided and the western portion eventually became a location for the Robert F. Kennedy Action Corps. The eastern portion has been under the Massachusetts Department of Capital Assets Management and Maintenance (DCAMM). Presently the future of this eastern portion remains uncertain. \nThis presentation will be held in the Dexter Room of Thayer Memorial Library (use rear entrance). A brief business meeting will precede the program. \nThis program is offered by the Lancaster Historical Society and Thayer Memorial Library as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:Why Do Birds Matter?
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED—NEW DATE & TIME TO BE DETERMINED\nWhy do birds matter? Join the Lincoln Land Conservation Trust and Trevor Lloyd-Evans as we explore this question. \nBirds have always captured people’s imagination and envy – they are beautiful\, they sing\, they can fly and we can’t. Because there are more than 10\,000 species found in most habitats all over the globe\, they have long been recognized as indicators of environmental change\, the malign effects of pollution and habitat degradation\, or used to assess the beneficial effectiveness of conservation and habitat restoration. \nTrevor Lloyd-Evans was born in Oxford\, England and educated at the University of Wales and Boston University\, recruited to Manomet Bird Observatory in 1972\, retired as a Vice President and continues today as a Senior Fellow. Over the years he has worked at conservation research and education in avian biology\, ecology\, evolution and habitat analysis. He has enjoyed teaching at school\, college and adult levels\, traveled extensively on bird research projects\, and published extensively in bird and conservation publications. \nREGISTRATION REQUIRED: Register for this webinar online at lincolnconservation.org \nTHIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED—NEW DATE & TIME TO BE DETERMINED\nThis program is offered by the Lincoln Land Conservation Trust as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:Fibers of Life; MORE textiles from the Westford Historical Society’s Collection
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Westford Historical Society & Museum for the show and tell lecture\, “Fibers of Life.” Their collection of local artifacts\, from clothing and accouterments to linens and household items is typical of many New England towns. However\, each one of these objects has its own unique and interesting story to tell.
