SUMMARY:The Ten Tea Parties-Historic Book Discussion with Leslie Howard
DESCRIPTION:Joseph Cummins: Ten Tea Parties\, Patriotic Protests That History Forgot\nThe stories in Ten Tea Parties illuminate the power of Americans banding together as Americans \nTo borrow a copy of the book\, contact Linda at director@museum.westford.org \nWe all know the story of the Boston Tea Party\, but do you know the history the Philadelphia Tea Party\, or the York Tea Party? Or how about the Wilmington Tea Party? Ten Tea Parties is the first book to chronicle all these uniquely American protests. Author and historian Joseph Cummins begins with the history of the East India Company (the biggest global corporation in the eighteenth century) and their staggering financial losses during the Boston Party- move than a million dollars in today’s money. We then travel to Philadelphia where Captain Samuel Ayres was nearly tarred and feathered by a mob of 8\,000 angry patriots. Then we set sail for New York where the Sons of Liberty raided the London\, and heaved 18 chests of tea into the Hudson River. Still later\, in Annapolis\, a brigantine carrying 2\,300 pounds of the “wretched weed” was burned to ashes. Together\, the stories in Ten Tea Parties illuminate the power of Americans banding together as Americans- perhaps for the first time in the fledgling nation’s history. It is no wonder that these patriots remain an inspiration to many people to this day. Order book here \nDiscussion led by Leslie Howard\, President\, Westford Historical Society \nSuggestion Program Donation: $10 per person \nPhoto courtesy of the Westford Historical Society & Museum

SUMMARY:Liberty Pole Capping & Raising Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:The Liberty Pole Capping and Raising is a reenactment of a practice in Colonial America signifying dissatisfaction with varied rulings and conduct of the English government of that date.  It is meant to be commemorative of the spirit of liberty exemplified by Bedfordians and other colonials in the early phases of the War for Independence.  The Colonial units from the surrounding area form up on the Town Green\, in front of the Unitarian Church.  The VIP guests assemble at the Fitch Tavern. This is the place where the original Bedford Minutemen assembled on the morning of April 19th\, 1775. After the colonial units pass the Fitch Tavern\, on their way to Willson Park\, the VIPs and the Bedford Minutemen follow with the pole.  After a few words\, the pole is erected and capped\, and hopefully this will not attract the attention of any British patrols.  This takes about forty-five minutes or less if the weather doesn’t cooperate. \nFor more information. \nFor flyer information click here. \nPhoto courtesy of the Bedford Minuteman Company

SUMMARY:Lexington Alarm Letter – Annual Viewing
DESCRIPTION:Each year at the time of the Massachusetts Patriots’ Day holiday\, the museum is proud to display the Lexington Alarm letter—one of the documents used to notify the colonies south of Massachusetts that war had begun. The letter will be on view April 10 through April 21\, 2023. \nCouriers delivered the news of the conflict at Lexington throughout the colonies soon after the event. This alarm letter was written by Joseph Palmer\, a member of the Committee of Safety in Watertown\, a town near Lexington. Recipients duplicated Palmer’s letter several times to carry the news far and wide. Daniel Tyler\, Jr. of Connecticut penned the museum’s copy of Palmer’s letter\, probably on April 20\, 1775. The original Alarm Letter written by Palmer at Watertown is thought to be lost. \nWhat makes this hand-written document such an exciting piece of American history is the urgency with which it was written. As we read the text\, we can sense the shock and concern of its author\, Joseph Palmer. It reads: \nWatertown Wednesday Morning near 10 o’Clock \nTo all the Friends of American Liberty\, be it known that this Morning before breake of Day a Brigade consisting of about 1000 or 1200 Men landed at [David] Phip’s Farm at Cambridge & marched to Lexington where they found a Company of our Colony Militia in Arms\, upon Whom they fired without any Provocation and killed 6 Men and Wounded 4 others. By an Express from Boston this Moment\, we find another Brigade are now upon their march from Boston supposed to be about 1000. […] \nI have spoken with Several Persons who have seen the Dead & Wounded. Pray let the Delegates from this Colony to Connecticut see this they know. \nPalmer wrote the letter 10 a.m.\, only one half-hour after the skirmish at Concord’s North Bridge. The encounter between Lexington’s militia under Capt. John Parker and the force of 700 or so Regular Army soldiers sent out from Boston was much earlier\, at around 4:30 a.m. Palmer had spoken to witnesses of the destruction at Lexington and fears that more unprovoked attacks are to come from the second brigade he learned is on its way from Boston. His letter spreads the news of unfolding events\, the outcome of which he does not yet know.

SUMMARY:Patriots' Day Spirit 2023
DESCRIPTION:A Living History of the Colonial and Civil War eras \nOn Sunday\, April 16\, the Iron Work Farm will explore the full meaning of Patriots’ Day\, which was established to commemorate the start of not one\, but two wars in our country’s history.  In both wars\, the people of Acton and the Faulkner Homestead played an important part. \nBeginning at 1:00 p.m.\, three groups of re-enactors will be on hand to mark the April 19\, 1861 start of the Civil War.  Soldiers of the 28th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and the 12th Georgia Infantry will stage an encampment and hold skirmishes in the Faulkner woods\, while members of “Be What Remains”\, the re-enactors of the US Sanitary Commission\, will demonstrate the help they gave to the enlisted soldiers during the war. A musical ensemble\, the “Shades of Gray” will be on hand to perform mid-19th century tunes. \nOn April 19\, 1775\, on the first day of the Revolutionary War\, local families gathered in the Faulkner dooryard to cook food to take to the Acton militiamen in the field.  Visitors will experience 18th-century home life with outdoor cooking\, children’s games\, etc.\, while in the Faulkner House\, members of the Nashoba Valley Weavers Guild will demonstrate colonial weaving\, and show off the old “barn frame” loom. \nAt the end of the afternoon\, at about 5:30 the Acton Minutemen will stage their annual “Robbins’ Ride” reenactment—the arrival of the horse and rider who brought the news to Col. Francis Faulkner earlier that day that the British were marching on Concord. \nPatriots’ Day Spirit is open to the public for a modest donation—“Give What You Will”.  Parking is available in the nearby public lots. \nImage courtesy of Iron Work Farm

SUMMARY:Robbins' Ride Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:Join the Acton Minutemen as they commemorate the heroic ride of the thirteen year old son of Captain Joseph Robbins\, one of Acton’s militia leaders\, in the early morning hours of April 19th\, 1775. Click here to learn more about this story! \nCeremonies and fire musket vollies are held at each of the four stops\, and at the Faulkner Homestead in South Acton\, Faulkner himself stumbles out in his nightclothes and manages (hopefully) to fire his musket 3 times to spread the alarm to his troops\, whereupon the volley is echoed by another musket some distance away\, followed by yet another even further off\, demonstrating how the alarm was spread across town. \nPlease  join us for this annual event held on the Sunday of Patriots’ Day weekend! Here is the preliminary schedule of the stops the rider makes: \n5:00 pm at the Robbins’ Homesite – soccer fields at bottom of Concord Road \n5:20 at the Isaac Davis Homestead – 39 Hayward Road \n5:40 at the Faulkner Homestead – 5 High Street in So. Acton (corner of Rte. 27) \n5:55 at the Liberty Tree Farm – 24 Liberty Street\, also in So. Acton \nImage courtesy of Anne Forbes\, Iron Work Farm
