SUMMARY:The Colored Museum: Past/Present/Future
DESCRIPTION:In a bold new exhibition at The Umbrella Arts Center in Concord\, noted artist and curator Cedric Vise1 Douglas has found inspiration in a provocative work of theater\, George C. Wolfe’s satirical play\, The Colored Museum\, to create a visual journey of the Black Past\, Present and Future. \nOffering a diverse array of media\, styles and audience engagement experiences\, The Colored Museum: Past/Present/Future features work by 10 emerging and established Black artists from throughout the eastern U.S. including Thomas “Kwest” Burns\, Barrington Edwards\, Ifé Franklin\, Nettrice Gaskins\, Shea Justice\, Chaz Maviyane-Davies\, Keith Morris Washington and Douglas himself. Also included is work by the late outsider artist\, Justin Printice Douglass\, created through The Umbrella’s education outreach program while incarcerated in Concord\, and originally unable to be publicly exhibited due to COVID. \nFree and open to the public the exhibition echoes\, responds to\, and challenges themes of the play\, produced May 20 – June 5 by The Umbrella’s professional stage company\, directed by Pascale Florestal. Wolfe’s play undermines Black stereotypes over time\, and challenges notions of museums and white spectatorship of Black experience\, through employing incisive and often hilarious satire. \nInspired by the play and conversations with Florestal\, Douglas selected these artists not only on their strengths as artists\, scholars and public speakers\, but as activists whose combined work represent a call to action for audiences to personally promote social change and dismantling of racism in their communities. The organizing framework creates dialogue among the Past\, from slavery\, the civil rights and back to Africa movements; the Present demands for personal and political change in the wake of George Floyd; and Afrofuturist projections of race\, technology\, and Black bodies viewed through positive lenses. The exhibition also features an audience interaction component that allows visitors to leave messages\, have conversations in regard to race relations\, and reimagine museums and cultural institutions themselves. \nRELATED READINGS \n\n\nMeet the Artists of The Colored Museum: Past\, Present\, Future\nRemixing Museum Spaces\nBy Jennifer Mancuso\, Art New England\nSeries of Programs Offers Rich Explorations of Black Past\, Present and Future\nDiscover Concord Magazine

SUMMARY:History of the Rail Trails
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-person talk about the history of Rail Trails in the area\, in preparation for this month’s anticipated launch of the Twin Cities Rail Trail! \nCraig Della Penna is the Executive Director of Norwottuck Network. For twelve years\, Craig worked for one of the country’s earliest short-line railroad companies marketing rail freight and managing the planning and start-up operations of two of the northeast’s largest railroad-owned trans-loading facilities. Having a background in railroad history\, he was invited by a regional publisher to write a series of books about the history of old railroad lines and their conversion to bike and hike trails. He was later hired by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy as an organizer and for seven years covered the New England region. \nHe has been involved in much of the rail trail development in the northeast. For the past 19 years\, he has been a Realtor in Northampton Massachusetts\, with a special niche. He specializes in the sale of houses near rail trails\, greenways and other conservation lands.

SUMMARY:George S. Boutwell & the Emancipation Proclamation
DESCRIPTION:Likely you know that Groton‘s George Boutwell was the twentieth Governor of Massachusetts. But did you know that while serving as Abraham Lincoln’s Commissioner of Internal Revenue\, he was also the president’s close political ally and confidante?  His\, the voice that made Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation a reality by stating publicly (after the Battle of Antietam in 1862) what the president for political reasons couldn’t yet say: that the Civil War would not be won until we “take slavery by the throat and destroy it.” \nIndeed\, as writer\, historian\, and science policy specialist Jeffrey Boutwell puts it\, “For seven decades\, George Boutwell sought to “redeem America’s promise” through racial equality\, economic equity\, and the humane use of American power abroad.” \nJoin Jeffrey for his talk “George Boutwell and the Emancipation Proclamation: Saying What Lincoln Couldn’t Say” on Sunday\, June 19\, at 2 pm at the Groton Center\, 163 West Main Street\, Groton.  This free presentation in celebration of the Juneteenth holiday and the abolition of slavery is made possible by the Commissioners of Trust Funds. SUMMARY:Reading Frederick Douglass Together
DESCRIPTION:Join us as The Wayside Inn Foundation hosts Reading Frederick Douglass Together on Saturday\, June 25th at 10:00 am. The program is funded\, in part\, by a grant from Mass Humanities as part of an initiative to bring communities together to read Douglass’s 1852 address\, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” \nOn the morning of the event\, readers will gather on the patio of Longfellow’s Wayside Inn to read the address (sections will be assigned in advance). Afterward\, a light continental breakfast will be served and participants will break up into small groups to informally discuss Douglass’s speech and how it continues to shape our country. Frederick Douglass escaped from slavery in 1838 and lived for many years in Massachusetts. He delivered the Fourth of July speech on July 5\, 1852\, in Rochester\, New York\, to the Rochester Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Society. The most celebrated orator of his day\, Douglass’s powerful language\, resolute denunciations of slavery\, and forceful examination of the Constitution challenge us to think about the histories we tell\, the values they teach\, and if our actions match our aspirations. \nHenry Wadsworth Longfellow\, the namesake of Longfellow’s Wayside Inn\, and Douglass found inspiration in one another’s words. Douglass quoted Longfellow’s 1839 poem “A Psalm of Life” in his 1852 address; and Longfellow reflected on Douglass’s words after seeing him speak in April 1860\, the echoes of which can be found in his famous poem\, “Paul Revere’s Ride” (later included in Tales of a Wayside Inn). \nWe invite all members of our community to join in this free public reading and discussion of Douglass’s famous speech. Volunteer readers may sign up HERE.
