SUMMARY:It’s Your Story: A Memoir Intensive Workshop with Nancy Shohet West
DESCRIPTION:Does the idea of writing your memoir tempt you — or intimidate you — or maybe both? No matter what your age\, you’ve had unique experiences worth retelling. Where you’ve lived\, what you’ve created\, whom you’ve influenced and been influenced by\, what your passions are\, what challenges you’ve faced down: these are all aspects of your life worth exploring in writing. The process of writing a memoir can be therapeutic\, creative\, informative\, or some combination of all of these. Deciding where to begin\, what to cover\, what to omit\, how to balance detail with emotion: It’s easy to bog down in the early stages of a memoir project\, but that doesn’t need to stop you. \nWe will combine discussion about the memoir process\, writing prompts and student contributions as we contemplate how to tell our life stories. Very short writing exercises during class\, along with the opportunity to have longer pieces of writing critiqued by the group between meetings\, will ensure that you make progress on your project. After three weeks\, you’ll have tools\, strategies and the motivation to get your memoir done! \nNancy Shohet West is a Boston-area journalist who helps individuals\, multi-generational families\, communities\, and special interest groups to write and self-publish their memoirs. For more information\, go to NancyShohetWest.com. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Fibers of Life
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Westford Historical Society & Museum for the show and tell lecture\, “Fibers of Life.” Their collection of local artifacts\, from clothing and accouterments to linens and household items is typical of many New England towns. However\, each one of these objects has its own unique and interesting story to tell. Penny Lacroix\, co-chair of the Nashoba Valley Weavers’ Guild\, will highlight eight textile objects from the Museum’s collections. Attendees will be able to look at the objects up close and in-person while hearing the stories about their provenance here in Westford and how they were made. \nMuseum visitors may already be familiar with the so-called Robinson Pincushion\, which is on display in the Museum’s Military exhibit. It was made by the wife of Col. John Robinson (our local Revolutionary War hero). Although faded\, there is much to be gleaned from this unique piece of everyday Westford history. \nEach of the other pieces – some clothing\, household items and accoutrements – will be pulled from storage\, where they are kept safe but are rarely seen. Join us for a dive into these Fibers of Life! \nOur presenter\, Penny Lacroix\, is a weaver\, spinner\, teacher\, historian\, manager\, learner\, creator and general lover of all things fiber. When she’s not actively learning something\, she’s sharing with others in one way or another –making something by hand\, demonstrating at historic events\, or teaching a class. With past careers as an engineer\, a mom\, a museum educator and a museum director\, combined with her hobby as a historical reenactor\, her worlds collide in the creation of textiles and the study of historic textile tools. Penny is co-chair of the Nashoba Valley Weavers’ Guild and teaches weaving and spinning. She lives in Westford\, MA with her husband and their furry friends. \nSpecial Instructions: Space is limited to 15. Reservations required\, visit museum.westford.org/events. \n  \n \nThis program is offered by the Westford Historical Society & Museum as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:The Artist and the Orchard: A Memoir by Linda Hoffman
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with artist\, orchardist\, and writer Linda Hoffman. \nLinda saved an orchard and reshaped her life at Old Frog Pond Farm in Harvard\, Massachusetts. Hoffman\, the mother of three children\, a Zen practitioner\, and a breast cancer survivor\, has now written about her extraordinary journey in The Artist and the Orchard: A Memoir. After the talk\, there will be time for Q&A\, and copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. \nThis program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the Nashoba Conservation Trust. \n\nClick here to register to attend in person or via Zoom.

SUMMARY:The Colored Museum: Past/Present/Future
DESCRIPTION:In a bold new exhibition at The Umbrella Arts Center in Concord\, noted artist and curator Cedric Vise1 Douglas has found inspiration in a provocative work of theater\, George C. Wolfe’s satirical play\, The Colored Museum\, to create a visual journey of the Black Past\, Present and Future. \nOffering a diverse array of media\, styles and audience engagement experiences\, The Colored Museum: Past/Present/Future features work by 10 emerging and established Black artists from throughout the eastern U.S. including Thomas “Kwest” Burns\, Barrington Edwards\, Ifé Franklin\, Nettrice Gaskins\, Shea Justice\, Chaz Maviyane-Davies\, Keith Morris Washington and Douglas himself. Also included is work by the late outsider artist\, Justin Printice Douglass\, created through The Umbrella’s education outreach program while incarcerated in Concord\, and originally unable to be publicly exhibited due to COVID. \nFree and open to the public the exhibition echoes\, responds to\, and challenges themes of the play\, produced May 20 – June 5 by The Umbrella’s professional stage company\, directed by Pascale Florestal. Wolfe’s play undermines Black stereotypes over time\, and challenges notions of museums and white spectatorship of Black experience\, through employing incisive and often hilarious satire. \nInspired by the play and conversations with Florestal\, Douglas selected these artists not only on their strengths as artists\, scholars and public speakers\, but as activists whose combined work represent a call to action for audiences to personally promote social change and dismantling of racism in their communities. The organizing framework creates dialogue among the Past\, from slavery\, the civil rights and back to Africa movements; the Present demands for personal and political change in the wake of George Floyd; and Afrofuturist projections of race\, technology\, and Black bodies viewed through positive lenses. The exhibition also features an audience interaction component that allows visitors to leave messages\, have conversations in regard to race relations\, and reimagine museums and cultural institutions themselves. \nRELATED READINGS \n\n\nMeet the Artists of The Colored Museum: Past\, Present\, Future\nRemixing Museum Spaces\nBy Jennifer Mancuso\, Art New England\nSeries of Programs Offers Rich Explorations of Black Past\, Present and Future\nDiscover Concord Magazine
