SUMMARY:Liberty Pole Capping & Raising Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:The Liberty Pole Capping and Raising is a reenactment of a practice in Colonial America signifying dissatisfaction with varied rulings and conduct of the English government of that date. It is meant to be commemorative of the spirit of liberty exemplified by Bedfordians and other colonials in the early phases of the War for Independence. \nThe Colonial units from the surrounding area form up on the Town Green\, in front of the Unitarian Church. The VIP guests assemble at the Fitch Tavern. This is the place where the original Bedford Minutemen assembled on the morning of April 19th\, 1775. \nAfter the colonial units pass the Fitch Tavern\, on their way to Willson Park\, the VIPs and the Bedford Minutemen follow with the pole. After a few words\, the pole is erected and capped\, and hopefully this will not attract the attention of any British patrols. This takes about forty-five minutes or less if the weather doesn’t cooperate. \nLearn more about this tradition at bedfordminutemen.org \nPhoto courtesy of the Bedford Minuteman Company

SUMMARY:Consequences of Genocide Denial: The Armenian Genocide
DESCRIPTION:On April 16 at 1:00 PM\, Ara A. Jeknavorian\, Ph.D.\, of the Merrimack Valley Armenian Genocide Education Committee\, will present “Consequences of Genocide Denial” at the Fort Devens Museum. \nAt the risk of infuriating Turkey\, President Biden formally announced in 2021 that the United States regards the killing of 1.5 million Armenians by Turks more than a century ago to be a genocide — the most monstrous of crimes. Mr. Biden was the first American president to make such an announcement\, breaking with predecessors who did not wish to antagonize Turkey\, a NATO ally and a strategically pivotal country straddling Europe and the Middle East. \nWhile this announcement carries enormous symbolic weight-equating the premeditated mass murder of 1.5 million Armenian men\, women\, and children from 1915-23 to the atrocities committed in Nazi-occupied Europe\, Cambodia and Rwanda-its incomprehensible continued denial and the lack of accountability by the Turkish Government can be linked to enabling subsequent cases of man’s inhumanity to man. \nThe presentation on Consequences of Genocide Denial provides a discussion on the causes and impact of the Armenian Genocide on 3000 years of Armenian Civilization in eastern Turkey\, and how its denial by its perpetrators has led to subsequent genocides.

SUMMARY:Robbins' Ride Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:Join the Acton Minutemen as they commemorate the heroic ride of the thirteen year old son of Captain Joseph Robbins\, one of Acton’s militia leaders\, in the early morning hours of April 19th\, 1775. Click here to learn more about this story! \nCeremonies and fire musket vollies are held at each of the four stops\, and at the Faulkner Homestead in South Acton\, Faulkner himself stumbles out in his nightclothes and manages (hopefully) to fire his musket 3 times to spread the alarm to his troops\, whereupon the volley is echoed by another musket some distance away\, followed by yet another even further off\, demonstrating how the alarm was spread across town. \nPlease  join us for this annual event held on the Sunday of Patriots’ Day weekend! Here is the preliminary schedule of the stops the rider makes: \n5:00 pm at the Robbins’ Homesite – soccer fields at bottom of Concord Road \n5:20 at the Isaac Davis Homestead – 39 Hayward Road \n5:40 at the Faulkner Homestead – 5 High Street in So. Acton (corner of Rte. 27) \n5:55 at the Liberty Tree Farm – 24 Liberty Street\, also in So. Acton \nImage courtesy of Anne Forbes\, Iron Work Farm

SUMMARY:Battle of Lexington Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:The Lexington Minute Men and local British Revolutionary War reenactors invite community members to witness the commemoration of the skirmish that took place on Lexington Common\, early on the morning of April 19\, 1775. The commemoration of the “Battle of Lexington” is on Patriots’ Day – April 18\, 2022 starting at 5:45 am on the Lexington Common (but arrive early for best viewing of the event). The event is FREE. \nImmerse yourself in April 1775 living history commemoration where you can talk to the Minute Men and hear how the tensions have raised with the British government. On early Monday morning\, Patriots’ Day an eerie calm settles over the Lexington Common. As the sun rises\, a rider arrives\, alarms and bells are sounded and the nervous Lexington Minute Men will be faced with an alarm. With the flash and roar of musketry firing into early twilight you will experience firsthand the confusion of this battle that will change the world. \nThe reenactment of the “Battle of Lexington” is just one event in which the Lexington Minute Men will participate on Patriots’ Day – April 18\, 2022. The Battle at Lexington starts at 5:45 am. The Lexington Minute Men also participate in the Lexington Sunrise Youth Parade at 7:30 am\, additional ceremonies near the Green at 8:15 am and 10:15 am and the Lexington Patriots’ Day Parade at 2:00 pm. The Lexington Minute Men is a civic reenactment organization dedicated to honoring all the brave Patriots who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation’s freedom. \nThe Lexington Minute Men have a long and proud history from the militia that fought on the Common in 1775\, to providing men to fight throughout the American Revolutionary War. The Lexington Minute Men gained attention again during the Centennial Celebration of 1875\, when President Ulysses S. Grant saluted the 77 men who stood on the Green. In the past 100 plus years\, the Lexington Minute Men have been involved in a number of ceremonial\, educational\, and civic functions. During the Bicentennial\, the Minute Men served as honor guards for President Gerald Ford and Queen Elizabeth. The Lexington Minute Men are under the command of Captain David Kemper. \nFor more information on the Lexington Minute Men visit https://www.lexingtonminutemen.com/ \nFollow us on twitter @LexingtonMM1775 or Facebook at @thelexingtonminutemen \nShare your experience at the Battle of Lexington with others by using hashtag #Lexington1775 \nPhoto courtesy of the Lexington Minute Men

SUMMARY:Patriots' Day Spirit 2022
DESCRIPTION:Join Iron Work Farm for a fun and activity filled Patriots’ Day Spirit celebration. \nCome travel back in time with us to learn why we celebrate Patriots’ Day in Acton as the start of both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. What better place to do it than at the Faulkner Homestead\, the home of Col. Francis Faulkner in 1775\, and Col. Winthrop E. Faulkner in 1861! \nThe annual Patriots Day Spirit at the Faulkner Homestead shows why Patriots’ Day commemorates both events. We welcome all to this family-friendly event. \nCostumed re-enactors from two different centuries will take part. On April 19\, 1775\, colonial families waited in the Faulkner dooryard for news of their militiamen. Today’s visitors will experience 18th-century home life with outdoor cooking\, children’s games\, crafts\, etc. \nAdvancing to 1861\, to mark the start of the Civil War\, reenactment groups from both the North and South will be encamped on the hillside. If weather permits\, they will also stage a skirmish or two in the Faulkner Woods. \nPatriots Day Spirit is open to the public for a modest donation—“Give What You Will.” Parking is available nearby. \nCheck out photos from previous years. View a video from our Patriots Day Spirit 2013. \nImage courtesy of Iron Work Farm

SUMMARY:When Things Go Horribly Wrong with Sy Montgomery
DESCRIPTION:To research books\, films and articles\, Sy Montgomery has been chased by an angry silverback gorilla in Zaire and bitten by a vampire bat in Costa Rica\, worked in a pit crawling with 18\,000 snakes in Manitoba and handled a wild tarantula in French Guiana. \nShe has been deftly undressed by an orangutan in Borneo\, hunted by a tiger in India\, and swum with piranhas\, electric eels and dolphins in the Amazon. She has searched the Altai Mountains of Mongolia’s Gobi for snow leopards\, hiked into the trackless cloud forest of Papua New Guinea to radiocollar tree kangaroos\, and learned to SCUBA dive in order to commune with octopuses. \nSy Montgomery will discuss with Michael Frederick\, Executive Director of Thoreau Society\, her writing process and her best-selling memoir The Soul of an Octopus among other works spanning her long and adventurous career. \nThis workshop is part of the Write Connection at Thoreau Farm\, a program in partnership with the Thoreau Society. Through writing workshops and author talks we support writers who expand on Thoreau’s extraordinary insights into life\, nature\, and social responsibility or find in Thoreau inspiration for living deliberately\, practicing simplicity\, and exploring new ideas for positive change.
