Winchendon’s Old Centre Burial Ground

Hall Road, Winchendon, MA

Winchendon’s Old Centre Burial Ground on Hall Street contains the remains of at least 11 Revolutionary War Patriots. The town-owned cemetery was established in 1771, just a few years before the Revolution began. The grave markers here include a memorial to Eden London, an enslaved Black veteran of the Revolutionary War. When London fell ill after the war, the responsibility of his care fell to the town. The town of Winchendon attempted to fight the responsibility in court, but was eventually ordered to pay. London was buried outside the cemetery walls and never exhumed, although the memorial was later placed inside the gates.

Other known Patriots interred here include:

Joseph Boynton • Moses Hale • Job Hyde • Nathon/Nathan Knight • Eden London • Ephraim Parmenter • Paul Raymond • William Robbins • David Roberts • Bartholomew Stearns • Israel Whitcomb
