Wigwam Museum

Corner of Middle & Cross Streets, Amherst, NH

Located on the corner of Middle and Cross Streets in the center of Amherst, New Hampshire, the Wigwam Museum was built in 1839 as a Methodist chapel. It became known as “The Wigwam” in 1879 when the Methodist Society remodeled the building and raised its roof. The ceiling was painted by itinerate Italians and is reminiscent of designs seen in Italy.

The building was purchased by the Historical Society of Amherst, New Hampshire in 1969. Since undergoing a significant restoration in 1976, it is home to some of the society’s larger artifacts, including the restored Concord Coach and the old jailhouse door.
