Twin Cities Rail Trail

The Twin Cities Rail Trail is a partially completed 4.5-mile link that will ultimately connect the historic downtowns of the cities of Fitchburg and Leominster, Massachusetts. The trail is a conversion of an abandoned section of the Fitchburg and Worcester Railroad, which began service in 1850, starting in Fitchburg and running through Leominster and Sterling to connect the two cities to the Worcester and Nashua Railroad and points beyond.

The Twin Cities Rail Trail Association was established in 2004 to transform the abandoned rail corridor into a trail for bikers, walkers, runners, commuters, and others to enjoy safely. That year, Congressman John Olver secured $4 million in federal funding to build the trail. The first phase of the trail, scheduled to open in March 2022, will run from First Street in Fitchburg to Carter Park in Leominster.
