Stanley Trombly founded Trombly Gardens, then known as Sunny Prairie Farm, in 1950. He started out with just four cows and 500 chickens, specializing in raising poultry. Soon, his herd had expanded to contain 400 Holstein cows, and Sunny Prairie Farm was a full-fledged dairy.
Trombly Gardens is now in its fourth generation of family ownership. In 2000, the family transitioned to raising produce, hogs, and cattle, which they sold from a seasonal farm stand. In 2019, they opened a year-round farm stand on Milford’s North River Road.
The shop sells Trombly’s own farm-raised beef and pork, eggs, and seasonal vegetables alongside local milk and a variety of gourmet foods. But the offerings don’t stop there. Customers can shop online or join Trombley’s CSA, which includes add-ons for eggs, cut flowers, canned goods, and more.
Visitors to the farm will also find an ice cream window, homemade donuts and baked goods, and a wealth of all ages activities from pick-your-own berries in summer, to a corn maze and hay rides in fall. Trombley sells seasonal items such as pumpkins and Christmas trees, but their main holiday event is “The Dark Woods” haunted forest which takes place each Halloween season.
