The Patriot

Veterans Memorial Park, Bedford, MA

Erected in 2000, The Patriot is a bronze-cast sculpture by Bruce Papitto commissioned by the Bedford Cultural Council. The eight and one half feet tall sculpture depicts a Bedford militia man carrying the famous Bedford Flag into the first battle of the Revolutionary War.

Minuteman Nathaniel Page is believed to be the Patriot who carried the Bedford Flag to the North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts on April 19, 1775, seeing action on that date. The flag dates to 1737 and is the oldest known flag in the country. It is on display in the Flag Room at the Bedford Free Public Library.

Bruce Papitto, an American sculptor born in 1958, has created several large-scale sculptures for public spaces, including one of the late Senator John H. Chafee in Bristol, Rhode Island and The Bell Keepers in Alameda, New Mexico near the Rio Grande.

The Patriot can be found in Veterans Memorial Park in Bedford, Massachusetts.
