The Gardner Museum

28 Pearl Street, Gardner, MA

The Gardner Museum is a local history museum located in the heart of Central Massachusetts. Its mission is collecting and preserving materials pertaining to the rich history of the city of Gardner, also known as the “chair city of the world” and “Furniture Capital of New England.”

Established in 1978, the museum is located in the Levi Heywood Memorial Library building, which formerly housed the city’s library. Designed by Fuller and Delano of Worcester, the building was completed in 1886 and is an excellent example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. Notable architectural details include stained glass windows throughout and numerous decorative plaques. Interior features include three ornate brick and stone fireplaces and beautifully preserved oak moldings. The Gardner Museum was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and is located in the Gardner Uptown National Register Historic District.
