Overlooking the Concord River and the North Bridge, the North Bridge Visitor Center is housed in the former mansion of Stedman Buttrick, Sr., an heir of Major John Buttrick who led the Patriot attack on the British soldiers guarding the North Bridge on the morning of April 19, 1775.
It houses a diorama and offers a video program that illustrates the battle. Exhibits include uniforms, weapons, and tools of Colonial and British soldiers such as a period musket and powder horn, a plank from the original North Bridge, and “The Hancock,” a cannon that was hidden at Colonel James Barrett’s house, the destination of the British on April 19th. Park Rangers are available to answer questions from April through October.
Outside, picnicking is allowed, and the scenery is lovely. The Buttrick Gardens, which include a scenic overlook of the river and bridge, have recently been restored. A gift shop and restrooms are also available.
