First opened on April 4, 1881 by Joseph Reed and his wife, Mary, the library, augmented by an appropriation of $1,000 from the town, was housed in a room in the Acton Street School. In 1885 it was moved to the Riverside Cooperative building, now the home of the Knights of Columbus. In July of 1918, the library was moved again to the second floor of the Naylor building on Nason Street. A committee was established in 1960 to plan the construction of a municipal building and, in the same year at a Special Town Meeting, $329,000 was appropriated to construct a combined Town Building and Library.
Two years later, both the library and Town Building were dedicated. In 2006, a new library building opened at 77 Nason Street in the former Roosevelt School with funds raised from a combination of state, local, and private sources.
