Great Brook Farm State Park

165 North Road, Carlisle, MA

The only state park with a working dairy farm, Great Brook Farm State Park offers over 900 acres of park land primarily used for hiking, horseback riding and public programs. Twenty miles of trails, ten of which are machine-groomed for cross-country skiing in the winter, traverse a landscape once inhabited by Native Americans and early European settlers. Visitors can enjoy canoeing and fishing on Meadow Pond.

The Commonwealth purchased the property in 1967 and later realized the need to resurrect the abandoned dairy farm that had come with the land. Twenty years later, the Duffy Family took on this challenge and continues to lease and operate Great Brook Farm today. The state-of-the-art dairy features a “smart” barn which houses the first robotic milking system installed in Massachusetts. Free tours are available on weekends from May to October and the seasonal ice cream stand offers sixty flavors of ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet, and sorbet.
