Commemorated by a stone tablet at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Medford Street, Cooper’s Tavern played a role in many of the events of April 19th, 1775 in Menotomy (present day Arlington). Paul Revere rode past the tavern on his way to Lexington and it is reported that later that day, twelve men too old to fight met there and decided to ambush a British supply wagon. Upon their retreat from Concord, British troops stormed the tavern killing Jabez Wyman and Jason Winship, both of whom were unarmed at the time, before pillaging the tavern.
The marker’s inscription reads:
Here stood Cooper’s Tavern
In which
Jabez Wyman
And
Jason Winship
Were killed by the British
