The Old Bedford Burying Ground dates back to Bedford’s incorporation in 1729, when local deacon Israel Putnam sold an acre of land to the town. Now a part of the Old Bedford Center National Historic District, the cemetery is the final resting place of approximately 496 individuals.
At least 55 of those individuals were Revolutionary War Patriots, including Bedford Minutemen and Militiamen who fought along the Battle Road. The burial ground also pays tribute to enslaved Black Revolutionary soldiers Caesar Jones, Caesar Prescott, and Cambridge Moore, whose contributions were memorialized by the 1896 African Reservation Monument.
