SUMMARY:Declaring Independence: Then & Now – Lexington\, MA
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Independence Day on Saturday\, July 4 at 7:00 PM with Lexington History Museums at the Lexington Depot (13 Depot Square). This special event offers a moment of reflection and renewal on the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in a community central to the Revolutionary story. The program will conclude with a performance by the Lexington Historical Society Colonial Singers and an ice cream social. \nDeclaring Independence: Then & Now brings to life the Declaration of Independence as a forum for civic dialogue and engagement through a forty-minute performance and ensuing moderated community conversation. The script\, written by public historian Mary B. Fuhrer\, utilizes primary source material researched by citizen historians to reveal how individuals within Massachusetts towns debated and responded to the question of independence in the spring and summer of 1776\, followed by an annotated reading of the Declaration itself. \nIn commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, 15 community-hosted performances are scheduled across the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area during the spring and summer of 2026. Find a performance near you! \nDeclaring Independence: Then & Now is supported\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati

SUMMARY:Nym Cooke: Leading Lexingtonian
DESCRIPTION:Lexington has heroes in every century\, as change-seekers have made their mark on the town. Through building community\, working for social change\, pioneering in their fields\, and pursuing creative passions\, Leading Lexingtonians keep Lexington on the map as a historic place. This lecture series highlights their accomplishments\, which are also displayed on a rotating basis in the Lexington Depot Museum.\n\nNym Cooke is a music historian\, choral conductor\, and former film and theater director. One of his first projects in the theatrical world broke barriers and made a lasting impact on the community. In the summer of 1967\, as a high school senior\, he produced and co-directed a film\, titled Doublecross. Collaborating with 57 other Lexington High School students\, Cooke helped to conceptualize\, fund\, produce\, film\, and edit this 38-minute silent mobster film. The only adult involvement was from musician Ernest Stires\, who composed the film’s musical score. Today\, participants still get together for Doublecross reunions\, exchanging fond memories of this formative experience. Cooke is passionate about bringing people together\, believing that projects like Doublecross create “little worlds” that exist apart from everything else. In those moments\, all that matters is the people working together towards a shared creative goal.\n\nJoin us in welcoming Nym Cooke and Doublecross alumni for a discussion and celebration of his career and the Doublecross project.\n\n$10 LHM members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:Book Chat on The Men Who Lost America by Andrew Jackson O'Shaughnessy
DESCRIPTION:Stereotypes about the British military during the American Revolution are countless\, and often contradictory. Did England possess the most professional fighting force in the world\, or did they bumble through New England\, clinging tightly to outdated tactics while shrewd farmers rewrote the rules around them? Historian Andrew O’Shaughnessy untangles this web by following several prominent British leaders\, including George III himself\, to reveal the real competence\, as well as the human folly\, of the Crown and its representatives. Join us for a lively discussion\, lead by British military reenactor and historian Paul O’Shaughnessy\, on The Men Who Lost America.\n\nReading Into History: Book Chats is a series of informal discussions of historical topics inspired by nonfiction history books\, and led by authors\, historians\, and local history enthusiasts. SUMMARY:Declaring Independence: Then & Now
DESCRIPTION:This dramatic presentation\, created by Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area\, aims to find out how our local towns read and reacted to the Declaration of Independence. \nAcross the colonies\, and particularly in Massachusetts\, towns debated what freedom meant to them\, and grappled with the grievances aired in the official Declaration. What did the words in the final document mean to them? Costumed reenactors will bring life to the words of the past\, with narration by former State Representative Jay Kaufman. \nRounding out our evening will be a performance by the Lexington Historical Society Colonial Singers. Some of our favorite tunes from the 18th century were highly political\, and many of them were also taken from popular English military music!

SUMMARY:Pride Month Lecture: Longfellow Legacies
DESCRIPTION:When most people—especially in Lexington—hear the name Henry Wadsworth Longfellow today\, they probably think of his 1860 poem\, “Paul Revere’s Ride.” But what about the man behind the famous verses? For this special Pride Month presentation\, public historian Meaghan Michel will explore LGBTQ+ history through three generations of the Longfellow family. Join us and learn how queer people in the 19th and early 20th centuries faced hardships\, found love and acceptance\, and made their mark on history.\n\nMeaghan Michel is an independent historian with a B.A. in Public History from Suffolk University\, and a decade of experience as a ranger at the National Parks of Boston\, including four years at Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters National Historic site. She is currently a guide with HubTown Tours and a volunteer at The History Project.\n\nThis event brought to you in partnership with LexPride!\n\n$10 Lexington History Museums members\, $15 nonmembers\n\nEventBrite registrants are automatically enrolled in the Lexington History Museums weekly newsletter.

DESCRIPTION:The British Regular Army was one of the most powerful military forces in the world in the 18th century. But in the course of one fateful day\, their luck changed. On April 19th\, 1775\, 750 soldiers set out on a grueling 40-mile march\, and walked straight into a revolution. In Lexington and Concord\, they fought with locals intent on thwarting their mission\, and fled back to Boston chased by thousands of American soldiers. Munroe Tavern became an important resting point on their journey. Stop by and meet members of His Majesty’s recreated 10th Regiment of Foot to see military drilling and learn more about the lives of our forgotten foes. \nFree! \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n This event explores our region’s revolutionary past! SUMMARY:Lexington Celebrates! Walking Tour

Over the centuries\, thousands of people have descended upon the Battle Green to welcome Revolutionary War heroes like the Marquis de Lafayette on his tour of America in 1824. Join a Lexington Historical Society educator as they illuminate 250 years of stories full of crowds\, chaos and celebrations! \nStarting and ending at Buckman Tavern\, this tour explores areas around the Lexington Battle Green. The tour is 1 hour long and covers about a 1/2 mile on flat ground. \n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers – Register Here \nImage of the 1875 Battle of Lexington Centennial Parade provided courtesy of the Lexington Historical Society Archives. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n This event explores our region’s revolutionary past! SUMMARY:Book Chat on Poor Richard's Women
DESCRIPTION:Behind any founding father are numerous founding mothers\, sisters\, and lovers. Benjamin Franklin had a large cast of women in his life\, most importantly his wife of 44 years\, Deborah Read Franklin. While frequently absent from the historical narrative due to their frequent time apart\, Deborah was an important witness to and active participant in the political workings of the early Revolution\, running the family businesses and raising a family in tumultuous times with her husband often away. Then\, as Franklin traveled the globe\, his social circle also expanded to include landladies and liaisons in London and Paris. Join us to discuss Nancy Rubin Stuart’s exploration of history’s forgotten heroines. \n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers \nPlease note that due to construction at the Depot\, Book Chats for the 2024-25 season will take place in the archives and Research Center at Munroe Tavern.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n This event explores our region’s revolutionary past! SUMMARY:Alarmed in Lexington
DESCRIPTION:Step back in time to experience the anxious hours before the start of the American Revolution. It’s past midnight on April 19th\, 1775\, and Paul Revere has just left the home of Lexington’s minister\, Jonas Clarke\, with news of an impending British attack. This leaves the home’s occupants to take in the news and prepare for what is to come. In a series of three short plays by playwright Debbie Wiess\, see how John Hancock and Samuel Adams\, leaders of the Revolution\, Dorothy Quincy and Lydia Hancock\, John’s family\, and Jonas and Lucy Clarke\, town leaders\, process the impending crisis as they prepare for war in the very rooms in which these conversations took place two hundred and fifty years ago. \nThis program is funded in part by Kirkland and Shaw Plumbing and Heating\, and by a grant from the Lexington Council for the Arts\, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, a state agency. \n$20 members\, $25 nonmembers \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n This event explores our region’s revolutionary past!
