SUMMARY:The Times Are Exceedingly Altered: Native Americans in Southern New England and the Revolution
DESCRIPTION:At the end of the 1780s\, a group of Mohegans bemoaned that “[t]he times are exceedingly altered\, yea the Times have turned everything topside down.” That was certainly true for indigenous peoples between the Appalachians and the Great Lakes\, where a half-century of war and displacement had crested with the U.S. victory and the end of usefully competing European powers. But was also true for those in southern New England who a century earlier had survived the devastations of King Philip’s War.\n\nOver a 30-year career\, Daniel Mandell\, Professor of History Emeritus\, Truman State University\, and author of Tribe\, Race\, History: Native Americans in Southern New England\, 1780-1880\, produced a body of work that tells the story of New England Native Americans from the time of first European contact through the formation of the United States and its expansion. He will discuss the Native American experience during the American Revolutionary period where they remained in distinct communities and sought to secure their rights in diverse ways. \nPlease Note: There is no livestream. This event will be taped and available at Acton TV https://actontv.org/ and on the Acton250 website https://www.actonma.gov/250 where you’ll find all programming information and a link to the Acton 250commemorative store. \n\n\nCo-sponsored with Acton 250.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn person at Acton Memorial Library\, Room 204. All programs are free but require registration here. \n\n\n\n\n—\nThe Friends of Pine Hawk 2024 Fall Programs are presented with support from the Acton Memorial Library and Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. \nAll programs are free but require registration here \nLink to 2024 Friends of Pine Hawk Fall Programs Flyer (PDF)

SUMMARY:Burying the Trowel: A History of Controversy and Innovation in New England’s Cultural Stone Features Debate
DESCRIPTION:Unusual stone features dot the woodlands and hillsides of New England\, and their provenance has been subject to many theories and debate. Kitty O’Riordan is a cultural anthropologist who has been studying the people\, methods\, and literature surrounding the cultural stone features debate in New England for nearly a decade. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut\, where she currently teaches. This talk gives an overview of the changing ways stone features have been understood over time\, the friction this has caused between avocational researchers and professional archaeologists\, and the benefits and limitations of new techniques in their study. O’Riordan will discuss the ways some are working to repair collaborative relationships to build new networks of communication that provide promise for future investigations of these culturally important places.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn person at Acton Memorial Library and via Zoom—All programs are free but require registration here.

SUMMARY:Archaeological Discoveries in New England
DESCRIPTION:Peabody award winning Smithsonian filmmaker Ted Timreck will share documentary footage from two little known discoveries that show the potential of what might be found anywhere in the New England countryside. After the viewing Ted will explain how the controversial “diffusion” discoveries of the 1970’s made by amateurs in local communities evolved into the discovery and recognition of an unknown chapter in Eastern Maritime Native history going back to the Ice Age. That led to research that extends out onto the submerged continental shelf in the Atlantic. Ted has been a regular speaker at Friends of Pine Hawk events and is best known for his thirty-year exploration of the Northeast’s antiquarian past\, with the Hidden Landscape film series. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn person at the Acton Memorial Library and via Zoom—All programs are free but require registration here.

SUMMARY:Acton: 4000 to 7000 Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:Extending a popular talk archaeologist Kimberley Connors gave last year\, 4000 to 7000 Years Ago focuses specifically on Acton’s archaeological sites from the Middle Archaic period (4000-7000 years before present). The most well-known of these is the Pine Hawk site in South Acton\, but there are several other sites along the Assabet River and its tributaries. \nThis program brings our local landscape alive by looking at why indigenous people were so attracted to this region. Through the artifacts and excavations of local archaeological sites\, people can look beyond the glare of the modern to the contours of the land and understand more about Indigenous people and how they thrived here for millennia. \nMs. Connors will also lead a walk through the Trail through Time a short time later on May 18\, so people can see firsthand some of the landscape and sites described in this lecture. \nThis program is offered in person at the Acton Memorial Library and via Zoom. Registration is required. \n  \nThis program is offered by the Friends of Pine Hawk and Acton Memorial Library as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:Reading Between the Lines: Contextualizing New England's Indigenous Rock Art
DESCRIPTION:New England’s rock art\, imagery carved or painted on stone\, provides a tantalizing\, if often opaque\, window into the region’s deep indigenous history. Drawing primarily from examples in Maine\, Peter Anick\, vice president of ARARA (American Rock Art Research Association)\, reviews various attempts to date\, contextualize\, and interpret figures using geology\, ethnography\, and comparisons with other sites. He relates how his experience researching difficult-to-see abstract art in Arizona contributed to the recent discovery of an unusual style of art here in New England. \nIn person at Acton Memorial Library and via Zoom. SUMMARY:Indigenous People of Concord Walk
DESCRIPTION:For over 10\,000 years the indigenous people of the land knew this area as Musketaquid\, the land between the grassy rivers. This tour explores the history of the first people and how they lived in a land of abundance seeking to keep and foster balance with the natural world\, their mother\, who sustained them always. What happened when cultures collided after European fur traders came and then English settlers in the 17th century will be discussed as we examine how those events shape the world of the indigenous people of Massachusetts today. \nThis event will take place in Concord and be guided by Amy Cole. Cost is $10 per person. Registration limited to 20. Directions will be emailed to registrants. SUMMARY:Magunkaquog Praying Town
DESCRIPTION:Archaeologist Holly Herbster discusses her research on one of seven original “Praying Towns” established in 1669 by missionary John Eliot. Colonial records tie specific Native people to the archaeological remains of the original meeting house and the importance of this place within Nipmuc homelands. Ongoing collaborative research with Nipmuc descendants is carrying this story forward. \n\n\n\n\nThe Magunkaquog community was one of seven original “Praying Towns” established by missionary John Eliot in Massachusetts Bay. Recognized in 1669\, Magunkaquog was a gathering place for Nipmuc people until Harvard’s purchase of the land in 1715. Seventeenth and early eighteenth-century documents identify several Native people who were associated with Magunkaquog\, including Isaac Nehemiah\, who committed suicide the day after Harvard’s takeover. These individuals and their families become difficult to trace after 1715 when the community was “dissolved” and associations with Magunkaquog are harder to find in the documentary record. Senior Archaeologist Holly Herbster will discuss how Magunkaquog’s history was carried forward\, and how collaborative research with Nipmuc descendants is giving this history a future. \nHolly Herbster is a senior archaeologist/principal investigator with The Public Archaeology Lab\, PAL\, a cultural resource management firm in Pawtucket\, Rhode Island\, where\, among other responsibilities\, she is responsible for the supervision of all phases of archaeological fieldwork in New England and the Northeast. Her research focus includes documentary and ethno-historic studies and she has collaborated extensively with Native American groups in Massachusetts. \n\n\n\n\nIn-person and streamed—All programs are free but require registration here. \n—\nThe Friends of Pine Hawk 2022 Fall Programs are presented with support from the Acton Memorial Library and Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area\, in collaboration with the Sargent Memorial Library of Boxborough and the Littleton Historical Society. \nAll programs are free but require registration here \nLink to 2022 Fall Programs flyer (pdf)
