SUMMARY:Tahattawan's World
DESCRIPTION:Who were the Indians who lived in the Acton area before the English arrived? It is widely understood that this band\, led by their sachem Tahattawan\, transferred Musketaquid/Concord to the English in the 1630s\, adopted Christianity\, settled down nearby at Nashobah/Littleton\, endured rough handling during King Philip’s War in the 1670s\, and then merged into the general diaspora of Christian Indians in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. \nLocal historian Brent Ranalli has undertaken a fresh\, close reading of the source documents from the seventeenth century for a new book project. This talk presents some of his findings\, enhancing our understanding of the band and their story. \nREGISTRATION REQUESTED: https://tinyurl.com/Ranalli-May14 \nDATE: Thursday\, May 14 \nTIME: 7 – 8 PM \nLOCATION: Acton Memorial Library\, 486 Main Street\, Acton\, MA 01720 \n  \nThis program is offered by the Friends of Pine Hawk and Acton Memorial Library as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:Boxborough Esker Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Boxborough Esker Walk in memory of George Krusen is sponsored by both the Boxborough Conservation Trust (BCTrust) and the Friends of Pinehawk. The landscape of Boxborough was sculpted over millions of years\, but some of the most dramatic features formed “only” about 15\,000 years ago. The Beaver Brook Valley Preserve protects a beautiful example of an esker – a long\, sinuous ridge of sediment that was formed under the edge of an enormous glacier at the end of the last ice age. \nTufts geologist Anne Gardulski will guide the walk along the crest of the Boxborough Esker and explain how it formed\, looking at the evidence in the sediments. Rita Grossman\, BCTrust’s president\, will also note how the efforts of George Krusen were key in protecting this significant geological feature from being fully excavated for gravel to build I-495. George also deeply appreciated the Native American imprints on the land in our region. Brian McClain from Friends of Pine Hawk will point out possible Indigenous stone structures including those as described in the book Manitou\, which will be discussed at the Pinehawk event taking place on November 13th. \nNote: this trail walk involves climbing steep terrain. Details\, including preparation\, will be emailed to registrants a few days in advance. For ages 13 and up and is limited to 40 participants. \nRain Date Sunday\, November 16 1-3 PM \nIn person only. All programs are free but require registration here. \n—\nThe Friends of Pine Hawk 2025 Fall Programs are presented with support from the Acton Memorial Library and Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. \nAll programs are free but require registration here \nLink to entire 2025 Friends of Pine Hawk Fall Programs lineup (PDF)

SUMMARY:Manitou Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join a group discussion of the groundbreaking work Manitou: The Sacred Landscape of New England’s Native Civilization. This book is now a classic in the archaeology of our region. Several decades ago\, one of the authors\, Boxborough resident Byron Dix\, discovered the first of many areas in New England believed to be ancient Native American sites. Dix and coauthor James Mavor tell the fascinating story of the discovery and exploration of these many stone structures and standing stones\, many of which are believed to play an important role in celestial observation and ritual. One chapter is devoted primarily to the stone structures of Boxborough and its magnificent esker\, the locale of the November 15 walk. \nIn person only at Acton Memorial Library. SUMMARY:Path of Souls: Traces of the Native Death Journey in Nashobah
DESCRIPTION:The book Path of Souls: the Native American Death Journey gives evidence of shamanic soul travel to the Milky Way in mound cultures. Are there traces of such structures and travel in Nashobah? Yes. Nashobah historian\, Dan Boudillion\, will explore local structures that mirror the arrangements identified by Gregory Little in the book and which may have been used for similar purposes. \nIn person only at Acton Memorial Library. Join Dan Boudillion and Bettina Abe for a 2-mile hike at Hockomock Swamp\, a Massachusetts Wildlife Management Area in Raynham\, Mass. There is much lore surrounding the history of Hockomock Swamp\, beginning in the 1600s. The area is the largest freshwater swamp in the state and is known for sightings of floating orbs of light\, ghostly voices\, and phantom drums linked to its past as an ancient burial ground and a natural fortress during King Phillip’s War. We will walk the trail\, while Dan shares the many stories and lore he has collected over the years. We will meet in Acton and carpool down Route 495 for an approximately one hour drive to “the Bridgewater Triangle.” \nWe will leave Acton at 9 AM. \nAll programs are free but require registration here.

SUMMARY:The Times Are Exceedingly Altered: Native Americans in Southern New England and the Revolution
DESCRIPTION:At the end of the 1780s\, a group of Mohegans bemoaned that “[t]he times are exceedingly altered\, yea the Times have turned everything topside down.” That was certainly true for indigenous peoples between the Appalachians and the Great Lakes\, where a half-century of war and displacement had crested with the U.S. victory and the end of usefully competing European powers. But was also true for those in southern New England who a century earlier had survived the devastations of King Philip’s War.\n\nOver a 30-year career\, Daniel Mandell\, Professor of History Emeritus\, Truman State University\, and author of Tribe\, Race\, History: Native Americans in Southern New England\, 1780-1880\, produced a body of work that tells the story of New England Native Americans from the time of first European contact through the formation of the United States and its expansion. He will discuss the Native American experience during the American Revolutionary period where they remained in distinct communities and sought to secure their rights in diverse ways. \nPlease Note: There is no livestream. This event will be taped and available at Acton TV https://actontv.org/ and on the Acton250 website https://www.actonma.gov/250 where you’ll find all programming information and a link to the Acton 250commemorative store. \n\n\nCo-sponsored with Acton 250.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn person at Acton Memorial Library\, Room 204. SUMMARY:Burying the Trowel: A History of Controversy and Innovation in New England’s Cultural Stone Features Debate
DESCRIPTION:Unusual stone features dot the woodlands and hillsides of New England\, and their provenance has been subject to many theories and debate. Kitty O’Riordan is a cultural anthropologist who has been studying the people\, methods\, and literature surrounding the cultural stone features debate in New England for nearly a decade. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut\, where she currently teaches. This talk gives an overview of the changing ways stone features have been understood over time\, the friction this has caused between avocational researchers and professional archaeologists\, and the benefits and limitations of new techniques in their study. O’Riordan will discuss the ways some are working to repair collaborative relationships to build new networks of communication that provide promise for future investigations of these culturally important places.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn person at Acton Memorial Library and via Zoom—All programs are free but require registration here. \n\n\n\n\n—\nThe Friends of Pine Hawk 2024 Fall Programs are presented with support from the Acton Memorial Library and Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. \nAll programs are free but require registration here \nLink to 2024 Friends of Pine Hawk Fall Programs Flyer (PDF)

SUMMARY:Archaeological Discoveries in New England
DESCRIPTION:Peabody award winning Smithsonian filmmaker Ted Timreck will share documentary footage from two little known discoveries that show the potential of what might be found anywhere in the New England countryside. After the viewing Ted will explain how the controversial “diffusion” discoveries of the 1970’s made by amateurs in local communities evolved into the discovery and recognition of an unknown chapter in Eastern Maritime Native history going back to the Ice Age. That led to research that extends out onto the submerged continental shelf in the Atlantic. Ted has been a regular speaker at Friends of Pine Hawk events and is best known for his thirty-year exploration of the Northeast’s antiquarian past\, with the Hidden Landscape film series. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn person at the Acton Memorial Library and via Zoom—All programs are free but require registration here.

SUMMARY:Acton: 4000 to 7000 Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:Extending a popular talk archaeologist Kimberley Connors gave last year\, 4000 to 7000 Years Ago focuses specifically on Acton’s archaeological sites from the Middle Archaic period (4000-7000 years before present). The most well-known of these is the Pine Hawk site in South Acton\, but there are several other sites along the Assabet River and its tributaries. \nThis program brings our local landscape alive by looking at why indigenous people were so attracted to this region. Through the artifacts and excavations of local archaeological sites\, people can look beyond the glare of the modern to the contours of the land and understand more about Indigenous people and how they thrived here for millennia. \nMs. Connors will also lead a walk through the Trail through Time a short time later on May 18\, so people can see firsthand some of the landscape and sites described in this lecture. \nThis program is offered in person at the Acton Memorial Library and via Zoom. Registration is required. \n  \nThis program is offered by the Friends of Pine Hawk and Acton Memorial Library as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:Reading Between the Lines: Contextualizing New England's Indigenous Rock Art
DESCRIPTION:New England’s rock art\, imagery carved or painted on stone\, provides a tantalizing\, if often opaque\, window into the region’s deep indigenous history. Drawing primarily from examples in Maine\, Peter Anick\, vice president of ARARA (American Rock Art Research Association)\, reviews various attempts to date\, contextualize\, and interpret figures using geology\, ethnography\, and comparisons with other sites. He relates how his experience researching difficult-to-see abstract art in Arizona contributed to the recent discovery of an unusual style of art here in New England. \nIn person at Acton Memorial Library and via Zoom. This tour explores the history of the first people and how they lived in a land of abundance seeking to keep and foster balance with the natural world\, their mother\, who sustained them always. What happened when cultures collided after European fur traders came and then English settlers in the 17th century will be discussed as we examine how those events shape the world of the indigenous people of Massachusetts today. \nThis event will take place in Concord and be guided by Amy Cole. Cost is $10 per person. Registration limited to 20. Directions will be emailed to registrants. Register here. \n—\nThe Friends of Pine Hawk 2023 Fall Programs are presented with support from the Acton Memorial Library\, Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area\, and the Littleton Historical Society. \nOnline registration required. \nLink to 2023 Fall Programs flyer (pdf)
