SUMMARY:Boxborough 1857 School House #2
DESCRIPTION:The current one room wood School House #2 was constructed in 1857 and today is largely unchanged from when it was built. In 1949\, the town sold the existing 4 one-room schoolhouses at auction to the general public. School House #2 was bought by the Robinson family with the intention of preserving it for educational and historical purposes and restoring it as a “living museum” of past education. Over a period of years it has been furnished with antique desks from different time periods so classes could be “taught” to children as part of an “old time school” experience. Schoolhouse #2 is now owned and maintained by the third generation of the Robinson family. \nDATE: Sunday\, May 17 \nTIME: 2 – 4 PM \nLOCATION: Boxborough 1857 School House #2\, 339 Picnic Street (corner of Hill Road)\, Boxborough\, MA 01719 \nACCESS: There is one step up into the building and therefore it is not wheelchair accessible. \n  \n  \nThis program is offered by the Boxborough Historical Society\, in cooperation with The Robinson Family who owns the property\, as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:Why Was a Child's Shoe Hidden in the Wall of a House for 300 Years?
DESCRIPTION:Join Duncan Brown\, Curator for the Boxborough Historical Society\, as he explains the story of why a child’s shoe was hidden in the wall of a Boxborough house for 300 years and the journey the shoe took to come home to the Boxborough Museum. \nThe house\, owned by James and Hannah Whitcomb\, was built in 1721 in a portion of Harvard later incorporated into Boxborough in 1783. During renovations in the 1950s\, the small shoe was discovered within a wall in the oldest part of the house. Concealed shoes have a long history throughout Europe and in early New England homes and a single child’s shoe was commonly used. \nThe presentation will take place in the Morse Hilberg Room of the Boxborough Town Hall at 29 Middle Road starting at 1:00 pm. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. \nPARKING & ACCESS: Parking is available around Town Hall or at UCC Congregational Church directly across the street.
