SUMMARY:Reimagining Paul Revere: A Conversation with Narragansett Artist and Community Activist Sage Carbone
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special viewing and discussion with Boston-based artist Sage Carbone about her Indigenous beadwork reimagining of Cyrus Dallin’s Paul Revere statue. This piece was commissioned by the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum for display in the Euro-American Figures Gallery with the support of a grant from Arlington Commission on Arts and Culture. Carbone will share how her art relates to her efforts to elevate the histories and perspectives of Indigenous peoples living in Greater Boston today through such work as the Indigenous Languages Visibility Project in Cambridge and annual Red Sox Native American Celebration. \nSage Carbone is a member of the Northern Narragansett Tribe and has Nipmuc and Mi’kmaq ancestry. This program is offered in conjunction with Freedom’s Way Hidden Treasures program and Arlington 250. Carbone views the semi quincentennial as an opportunity to envision what the next 250 years could look like when we engage with history in ways that lift up everyone. \nRegistration is not required. \nDATE: Saturday\, May 10th \nTIME: 2:00 – 3:30 PM \nLOCATION: Arlington Historical Society’s Smith Museum\, 7 Jason Street\, Arlington\, MA 02476 \nPARKING: Parking is located on Jason Street or take the next right onto Jason Terrace. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we close out Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area’s 2024 Connecting Communities: Walks & Talks program with a guided walking tour hosted by the Arlington Historical Society and Arlington 250. \nSPACE IS LIMITED TO 12; REGISTRATION REQUIRED – CLICK TO RESERVE YOUR SPOT!\nAround Patriots’ Day two small British flags appear in the Old Burying Ground in Arlington\, Massachusetts. These flags have been appearing for decades in the same place along the west wall of the cemetery. Historical references point to a mass grave of 40 British regulars who died on April 19\, 1775 in the retreat from Lexington and Concord in this location. A recent Ground Penetrating Radar study revealed disturbed soil in this location consistent with a mass grave. A permanent monument\, dedicated September 7\, 2024\, now marks this historic site. Visit the Arlington Historical Society’s website to learn more about this exciting project.  \nOur program will begin with a brief tour of the Jason Russell House where British bullet holes from April 19th\, 1775 can still be seen. We will then walk a flat and easy 0.3 miles to the Old Burying Ground\, passing Robbins Memorial Town Hall\, a statue by Cyrus Dallin\, the Winfield Robbins Memorial Gardens and the Whittemore-Robbins House. \nArriving at the Old Burying Ground\, we will see the recently dedicated Monument to the Fallen Crown Soldiers who Died on April 19\, 1775 and the 2023 Monument to Enslaved and Free Persons of Color in Menotomy who are buried in the same area. Before returning to the Jason Russell House\, we will visit the 1848 Revolutionary War Monument that marks the burial site of Jason Russell and 11 of his fellow Patriots who fell on April 19th\, 1775. \nPARKING: A small lot is located behind the Jason Russell House on Jason Terrace. Ample street parking is available on nearby Mass. DESCRIPTION:Arlington will observe Juneteenth on Monday June 19th with a gathering in the Town Hall Garden from 11a.m. – 2:00p.m. with performances by internationally acclaimed jazz artist Jacques Schwarz-Bart\, the Arlington High School Performing Arts Students\, and members of Arlington Black Joy Project\, as well as ice-cream and refreshments. \nPresented by Arlington Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion Division\, and the Arlington Commission for Arts & Culture (ArtsArlington) \nThis observance will immediately follow a dedication ceremony for a new Monument to Menotomy’s Enslaved & Free Persons of Color at 10:30a.m. in the Arlington’s Old Burying Ground on Pleasant Street\, organized by the Arlington Historical Society\, sponsored by the Town of Arlington\, and financially supported by the Louise Ruma Ivers Fund of the Arlington Historical Society\, with additional funding from Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. \nABOUT JUNETEENTH\nJuneteenth commemorates the day when the last group of previously enslaved Black people learned of their freedom in Galveston\, Texas on June 19th 1865\, two and half years after the Civil War ended and the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. The day would come to be known as Juneteenth\, or “Freedom Day”\, “Emancipation Day” and “Juneteenth Independence Day.” Beginning in Texas and spreading to the rest of the United States\, the holiday celebrates the freedom and perseverance of African Americans and is a day to reflect on Black life and experience and gather with loved ones.
