SUMMARY:Declaring Independence: Then & Now – Acton\, MA
DESCRIPTION:Gather at Acton Congregational Church (12 Concord Road)—across the road from the towering Isaac Davis Monument—on Sunday\, June 14 from 2:00-5:00 PM for a performance hosted by Acton 250. A facilitated community conversation and snacks will follow\, creating space for dialogue and shared insight. \nDeclaring Independence: Then & Now brings to life the Declaration of Independence as a forum for civic dialogue and engagement through a forty-minute performance and ensuing moderated community conversation. The script\, written by public historian Mary B. Fuhrer\, utilizes primary source material researched by citizen historians to reveal how individuals within Massachusetts towns debated and responded to the question of independence in the spring and summer of 1776\, followed by an annotated reading of the Declaration itself. \nIn commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, 15 community-hosted performances are scheduled across the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area during the spring and summer of 2026. Find a performance near you! \nDeclaring Independence: Then & Now is supported\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati

SUMMARY:Henry Knox’s Trek from Ticonderoga: Myths\, Realities\, and Results for Boston
DESCRIPTION:In early 1776\, the young Continental Army colonel Henry Knox moved dozens of heavy cannons and mortars from Lake Champlain to the siege lines around Boston; one of the most famous stories from the Revolutionary War. And like many famous stories\, it embodies a fair amount of legend and lore. This talk sorts out what we know\, what we only think we know\, and what we should know about how Knox brought this “noble train of artillery” that helped to make all of Massachusetts independent. \nJ.L. Bell maintains the Boston1775.net website\, offering daily helpings of history\, analysis\, and unabashed gossip about Revolutionary New England. He is the author of “The Road to Concord: How Four Stolen Cannon Ignited the Revolutionary War.” John is working on a new book about the difficult first year of the Continental artillery force. \nRemote Participation: You can watch live on YouTube at Acton TV http://tinyurl.com/Acton-TV. Recordings will be available at Acton TV https://actontv.org/ and on our website https://www.actonma.gov/250 where you’ll find all programming information and a link to our commemorative store.

SUMMARY:"I Screamed with All My Might" - The Civilians Trapped Behind the Boston Siege Lines
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of the Battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775\, numerous civilians found themselves trapped within Boston\, encircled by the newly formed Massachusetts Grand Army. The constant fear of an American assault\, coupled with outbreaks of disease and the erosion of civil liberties under martial rule fostered an atmosphere of desperation. Civilians found themselves caught between two armies and two worlds\, unable to flee and the uncertainty of what awaited them if they chose to remain. The experiences of those trapped behind enemy lines unveil another dimension of the Revolution: the quiet endurance of ordinary men\, women\, and children who faced hunger\, fear\, and hardship in their struggle to survive. \nAlexander Cain\, JD\, earned his economics degree from Merrimack College in 1993 and obtained his Juris Doctor from the New England School of Law in 1996. He has authored numerous research articles and presentations on the American Revolution. He published two books: We Stood Our Ground: Lexington in the First Year of the American Revolution and I See Nothing but the Horrors of a Civil War: The Loyalists of McAlpin’s Corps of American Volunteers. He created the blog and podcast Historical Nerdery (historicalnerdery.com). He is in the process of writing “For God’s Sake Fire!” – The Massachusetts Militia System on the Eve of the Battles of Lexington and Concord\, which is anticipated to be released in 2027. Alex leads an educational initiative in Northeastern Massachusetts that aims to introduce high school students to careers in advanced manufacturing\, construction\, and the skilled trades.

SUMMARY:“Dreadful Were the Vestiges of War: Bullet Strikes from the First Day of the American Revolution” with Joel Bohy
DESCRIPTION:In 2015\, Joel Bohy began a collaboration with conflict archaeologist Dr. Douglas Scott to understand more about the objects that were turning up during archaeological investigations on former battlegrounds. They studied all the surviving bullet-strikes including Buckman Tavern in Lexington\, whose front door still bears the mark of a bullet fired on April 19\, 1775. They also studied a powder horn worn by James Hayward of Acton who was shot through this horn at Fiske Hill during the British retreat. As Lord Percy arrived and led the British back to Boston\, the Jason Russell House in Arlington was the scene of intense fighting. Using modern forensic techniques\, Bohy and Scott have been able to determine what types of arms were used. \nActon Town Hall\, Room 204 at 7 PM. SUMMARY:The Times Are Exceedingly Altered: Native Americans in Southern New England and the Revolution
DESCRIPTION:At the end of the 1780s\, a group of Mohegans bemoaned that “[t]he times are exceedingly altered\, yea the Times have turned everything topside down.” That was certainly true for indigenous peoples between the Appalachians and the Great Lakes\, where a half-century of war and displacement had crested with the U.S. victory and the end of usefully competing European powers. But was also true for those in southern New England who a century earlier had survived the devastations of King Philip’s War.\n\nOver a 30-year career\, Daniel Mandell\, Professor of History Emeritus\, Truman State University\, and author of Tribe\, Race\, History: Native Americans in Southern New England\, 1780-1880\, produced a body of work that tells the story of New England Native Americans from the time of first European contact through the formation of the United States and its expansion. He will discuss the Native American experience during the American Revolutionary period where they remained in distinct communities and sought to secure their rights in diverse ways. \nPlease Note: There is no livestream. This event will be taped and available at Acton TV https://actontv.org/ and on the Acton250 website https://www.actonma.gov/250 where you’ll find all programming information and a link to the Acton 250commemorative store. \n\n\nCo-sponsored with Acton 250.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn person at Acton Memorial Library\, Room 204. SUMMARY:Acton 250: Acton’s and Concord’s Roads to Revolution with Robert Gross
DESCRIPTION:Countdown to April 19th\, 1775: Acclaimed historian and author Robert Gross joins the Acton 250 Lecture Series to present: Acton’s and Concord’s Roads to Revolution \nWednesday\, October 23rd\, 7PM in Room 204\, Acton Town Hall\, 472 Main Street\, Acton MA                             \nActon and Concord joined together on April 19\, 1775\, at the North Bridge\, igniting the War of Independence along different paths to revolution rooted in their separate histories. This talk highlights the two communities over the decade 1765-1775 from the Stamp Act to the Massachusetts Government Act.  It focuses on the conflicts and changes Acton and Concord experienced in their economic and social lives including population pressures on land\, challenges to patriarchy by couples seeking greater freedom to make their own marriages\, demands for an end to slavery by people of color\, and increasing inequality and insecurity in New England society. This story of  change will draw on the author’s Bancroft Prize-winning “The Minutemen and Their World”\, first published in 1976 (reissued in 2022). The talk also examines the extent to which the break with Britain changed the towns. How revolutionary was the Revolution? \nBob Gross is the James L. and Shirley A. Draper Professor of Early American History Emeritus at the University of Connecticut. A specialist in the social and cultural history of the United States from the Revolution to the Civil War\, Gross focuses particularly on New England. His first book\, The Minutemen and Their World\, presents a community study of Concord\, Massachusetts in the eighteenth century tracing the internal conflicts that shaped the town’s participation in the mobilization against British rule. Minutemen received the Bancroft Prize in American History. His studies of the Revolutionary period continued in the edited collection In Debt to Shays: The Bicentennial of an Agrarian Rebellion (1993). Prof. Gross’s latest book is The Transcendentalists and Their World\, published by Farrar\, Straus & Giroux and chosen by the Wall Street Journal as one of the ten best books of 2021. \nRemote Participation: You can participate in the Q&A using ZOOM http://tinyurl.com/Acton250-ZOOM or watch live at Acton TV http://tinyurl.com/Acton-TV. \nRecordings will be on our website and ActonTV after the event.
