SUMMARY:Lou Jones’ panAFRICAproject Comes to the Old Schwamb Mill
DESCRIPTION:The Old Schwamb Mill is proud to host the panAFRICAproject\, a compelling photography exhibition by Boston-based photographer Lou Jones. On view from March 21 through May 16\, the exhibition opens with a public reception at 2:00 PM on March 21 and concludes with a closing talk and event at 2:00 PM on May 16. \nMore than a decade in the making\, panAFRICAproject is a country-by-country visual documentary that challenges long-standing stereotypes and reframes how Africa is understood in the Western imagination. Rather than focusing on narratives of conflict and poverty\, Jones turns his lens toward the vibrancy\, innovation\, and everyday realities of contemporary African life\, highlighting industry\, education\, healthcare\, sports\, music\, and infrastructure across the continent. The project has grown into an expansive visual archive and educational platform\, exhibited in schools\, galleries\, museums\, and public spaces. With a long-term goal of documenting all 54 African countries\, the project continues to evolve as a celebration of culture\, progress\, and daily life. \nHosting panAFRICAproject at the Old Schwamb Mill places these global stories within a site deeply rooted in craft\, labor\, and community history. As a living industrial museum\, the mill provides a unique setting where photography\, history\, and contemporary dialogue intersect. The exhibition also serves as a community gathering point\, welcoming visitors of all ages. Lou Jones puts together a powerful photography exhibition reimagining how Africa is seen\, and bringing global stories into a historic local space.

For centuries\, it has been a canvas for expression\, a source of pride\, and a target of misunderstanding. With Crown\, we reclaim that narrative\, focusing on the joy\, love\, and artistry that Black hair represents. This exhibit is a celebration of how Black people’s magic and culture continue to shape the world. It’s a love letter to our legacy and a testament to our power.” \n \nCrown is more than an exhibit—it is a celebration of identity\, heritage\, and creativity. SUMMARY:For Love! For Liberty! A new musical Brings Revolutionary History to Life in Lexington
DESCRIPTION:A delightful new family musical celebrating courage\, sacrifice\, and the birth of the American Revolution will come to Lexington this spring. For Love! For Liberty! will be performed on Saturday\, April 11 at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library. \nBlending original music\, dance\, and powerful storytelling\, For Love! For Liberty! bridges centuries as middle-school history students help the U.S. Park Service bring the past to life. At the heart of the musical is the extraordinary true story of Henry Knox\, a young Boston bookseller who in the winter of 1775–1776 undertook an almost impossible mission: hauling sixty tons of cannon across frozen lakes and snow-covered mountains to save the struggling American Revolution. \nThe production also shines a light on the remarkable woman beside him\, Lucy Knox\, who defied her loyalist family\, sacrificed her fortune\, and sustained Henry’s courage through letters and  cake. \nFilled with memorable songs\, lively choreography\, and engaging historical characters\, the show is designed to inspire audiences of all ages while illuminating one of the most dramatic moments in Revolutionary history. By connecting the past with the present through young students discovering the story\, the musical celebrates the enduring power of love\, liberty\, and determination. \nPresented in historic Lexington\, the performance offers a fitting setting for a story that helped shape the nation’s fight for independence. \nFamilies\, history lovers\, and community members are encouraged to attend this unique theatrical experience that brings the American Revolution vividly to life.

SUMMARY:Bedford Liberty Pole Capping & Raising Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:The Liberty Pole Capping and Raising is a reenactment of a practice in Colonial America signifying dissatisfaction with varied rulings and conduct of the English government of that date. It is meant to be commemorative of the spirit of liberty exemplified by Bedfordians and other colonials in the early phases of the War for Independence. \nThe Colonial units from the surrounding area form up on the Town Green\, in front of the Unitarian Church. The VIP guests assemble at the Fitch Tavern. This is the place where the original Bedford Minutemen assembled on the morning of April 19th\, 1775. After the colonial units pass the Fitch Tavern\, on their way to Willson Park\, the VIPs and the Bedford Minutemen follow with the pole. After a few words\, the pole is erected and capped\, and hopefully this will not attract the attention of any British patrols. This takes about forty-five minutes or less if the weather doesn’t cooperate. \nFor more information. \nFor flyer information click here. \nPhoto courtesy of the Bedford Minuteman Company \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n This event explores our region’s revolutionary past! SUMMARY:The Role of the Press in the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:18th century newspapers and pamphlets were essential to the dissemination of information and were instrumental in fanning the flames of discord on both sides of the revolutionary conflict. However\, how did printers get their information? This interactive program\, with the added component of 18th century material culture items\, focuses on the incredible process of typesetting and the role that printing and propaganda played in the pivotal events leading up to the American Revolution. \nMichele Gabrielson is a local history teacher and historic interpreter of the 18th century. When she is not teaching in the classroom\, Michele can be found leading tours\, lectures\, and demonstrations at historic sites in the greater Boston area. She specializes in interpreting the history of colonial women printers\, the stories of loyalist refugees\, and of 18th century chocolate makers! \nPart of Bigelow Free Public Library’s Revolution 250 Series\, supported\, in part\, through the Freedom’s Way NHA Partnership Grant Program

SUMMARY:Reenactment of the Battle of Lexington
DESCRIPTION:On the night of April 18th\, 1775\, over 700 British soldiers were sent from Boston to Concord to destroy a store of ammunition and other supplies for an anticipated war. As dawn approached on the fateful following morning\, the town militia of Lexington stood in anxious anticipation to stand in their way. The two groups squared off on the town common\, a single\, mysterious shot rang out\, and the British soldiers opened fire. When the smoke cleared\, eight Americans lay dead\, another ten were wounded\, and a war for independence had begun. \nEach year\, the town of Lexington and a dedicated corps of reenactors recreates this event in real time on its original site. This year\, the event will take place on Saturday\, April 18th\, at approximately 5:15 AM. \nVISITOR TIPS: The Battle Reenactment starts very early in the morning\, with the Belfry ringing the militia to muster at 5:15 am and the battle following at 6:00 am (the actual time the historic battle occurred). The crowd around the Green can be several people deep; plan to arrive early\, by 4:00 AM if not earlier\, to pick a viewing spot. Ladders and stepstools are not allowed on the Green (please see the town website for other restrictions). \nPhoto courtesy of the Lexington Minute Men \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n This event explores our region’s revolutionary past!
