SUMMARY:On Being Human: Mosaic Meditations by Cynthia Fisher
DESCRIPTION:On Being Human: Mosaic Meditations by Cynthia Fisher\nSeptember 18 – December 20\, 2026 in the Allie Kussin Main Gallery \nOpening Reception: Tuesday\, October 6\, 6 – 8 PM (RSVP appreciated)\nMosaic Activity: during Free Family Day\, Saturday\, October 10\, 2 – 4 PM (registration appreciated)\nArtist Talk: Wednesday\, November 7\, 3 – 4 PM (RSVP appreciated) \nDriven by curiosity and a background in Wildlife Biology\, Cynthia Fisher has created varied and philosophical works that seek to elevate mosaics beyond the world of craft and into fine art. Through inspiring cultural conversations\, Fisher aims to engage the viewer in questioning our impact on the natural world. \nUtilizing a wide range of materials\, including vitreous glass and broken pottery\, the tactile and textured nature of the medium forces us to share the space. Prompting questions about how we currently engage with the world around us and how it may engage with us. Through her works\, she explores our environmental impact on our planet\, addressing not only the greatness of human life\, but our responsibility towards the natural world. \n“I do have reasons for hope: our clever brains\, the resilience of nature\, the indomitable human spirit\, and above all\, the commitment of young people when they’re empowered to take action.” – Jane Goodall \nThe Umbrella Arts Galleries are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Profiles in Patriotism: Elizabeth Freeman\, the Massachusetts Slave Who Sued for Her Freedom
DESCRIPTION:The Honorable Judge Dennis Curran (Ret.)\, who served as a Massachusetts trial judge for 15 years\, presents the last of his “America at 250” Lecture Series – Profiles in Patriotism: Elizabeth Freeman\, the Massachusetts Slave Who Sued for Her Freedom \nElizabeth Freeman is a little-known national hero\, and a symbol of courage and spirit to all who cherish freedom. She was among the first slaves in Massachusetts to sue for and win her freedom. \nDuring the Revolutionary War\, she heard the Massachusetts Constitution read aloud\, and heard these words: \n “All men are born free and equal….”\n \nFreeman recognized the potential legal and moral significance of these words and sought out an attorney to sue for her freedom under the newly-ratified state constitution. With the help of an attorney who was an abolitionist\, she pled her case for freedom in a western Massachusetts court. \nThe jury ruled in her favor and she became the first African-American woman set free under the Massachusetts constitution. Her case helped end slavery in Massachusetts

SUMMARY:Menjunje/Amalgamation: An Exploration of Language and Identity by Shelly “Lola” Freund
DESCRIPTION:Menjunje/Amalgamation: An Exploration of Language and Identity by Shelly “Lola” Freund \nSeptember 23 – November 16\, 2026 in the Wedge Gallery \n  \nOpening Reception: Tuesday\, October 6\, 6 – 8 PM (RSVP appreciated) \nDrop-in Fingerpainting Activity: during Free Family Day\, Saturday\, October 10\, 2 – 4 PM (registration appreciated) \nArtist Talk: Friday\, October 23\, 5 – 6 PM – Artist Talk (RSVP appreciated) \n  \nArtist Shelly “Lola” Freund utilizes brightly colored renditions of her own fingerprints and objects reminiscent of family keepsakes to reflect on her multicultural identity. By using her own body as the subject of her work\, Freund asks us to consider how identity is categorized and interpreted in our modern world.   \n  \nFreund’s sweeping canvases feature vibrant pinks and blues that shimmer with the additions of rhinestones\, glitter\, and copper. As light bounces from one canvas to the next\, the viewer is taken on a journey through the artist’s own diasporic origins. Whorls of string create pathways\, as she weaves between English\, Spanish\, and Hebrew\, reflected amongst the titles. \n  \nFreund’s painted geographies ask us to engage with questions of multiculturalism\, social tensions\, and attempt to identify the line between assimilation and acculturation. \n  \nThe Umbrella Arts Galleries are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Whorl: Vertical Gallery Activation by Debra Fleury
DESCRIPTION:Whorl: Vertical Gallery Activation by Debra Fleury\nSeptember 23\, 2026 – February 26\, 2027 \nOpening Reception: Tuesday\, October 6\, 6 – 8 PM (RSVP appreciated)\nDrop-in Drawing Activity: during Free Family Day\, Saturday\, October 10\, 2 – 4 PM (registration appreciated) \nOur inaugural Vertical Gallery Activation features a multi-media installation from Massachusetts artist Debra Fleury. Influenced by the human experience\, Fleury’s work seeks to encourage exploration and evoke a sense of joy and wonder. \nTranslucent fabric has been painted in a watercolor effect and sewn together\, creating channels and undulating patterns that are then filled with wire. Through this process\, “a hidden internal world is made visible\, giving shape to what is deeply felt but not easily named.” The work’s suggestion of structure and mercurial nature constantly transforms the piece\, allowing for a range of viewing experiences. \nFleury’s installation evokes a sense of curiosity in the viewer as they explore and experience the energy and evolution of her work in real time. \nThe Umbrella Arts Galleries are free and open to all. \nLearn more at theUmbrellaArts.org/whorl

Fleury’s installation evokes a sense of curiosity in the viewer as they explore and experience the energy and evolution of her work in real time. \nThe Umbrella Arts Galleries are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Disperse: Art Ramble by Helen Duncan
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Art Ramble features work by multi-media artist Helen Duncan. Duncan’s porcelain clay and wire forms are dispersed along the Fairyland Pond Trail in the Hapgood Wright Town Forest\, right off of Concord Center. Duncan’s delicate dandelion-esque pieces come alive on the trail\, responding to their environment by shifting with the breeze and reflecting sunlight. Through these exchanges\, as well as our own impact on the work\, we are asked to examine how the varied elements of the world around us may interact with each other. \nThrough her outdoor installation\, Duncan aims to create a space that “encourages reflection and awareness of the delicate balances that shape both the natural world and our own lived experiences\,” inviting viewers to slow down\, look\, and take notice. \nThe Umbrella Arts Galleries are free and open to all. \nOpening Reception: Tuesday\, October 6\, 6:00 – 8:00 PM (RSVP appreciated) \nArtist Walks (RSVP appreciated): \n\nSaturday\, October 10\, 2:00 – 4:00 PM (every 30 minutes) with Free Family Day\n\n\nTuesday\, October 13\, 9:00 – 10:00 AM\nThursday\, November 5\, 3:00 – 4:00 PM\n\n

SUMMARY:Swords to Plowshares: Civil War Memorials and the Building of Memorial Hall
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of the Civil War\, towns throughout Massachsuetts committed funds to raise monuments dedicated to those who had died during the war. Most monuments took the form of a simple obelisk\, tablet\, or generic Union soldier\, but Lancaster’s Memorial Hall – which had the dual purpose of serving as a monument to Lancaster’s Civil War dead and to house the Town’s public library – was markedly different. Join our Special Collections Librarian for this program\, where she will examine how Memorial Hall came to be\, and how the building remains a memorial to those Lancastrians who died in the deadliest war in American history. \nPlease email vhatchell@lancasterma.gov with questions.

SUMMARY:"Rails to Trails: How Bedford and Regional Railroad Lines Became Today's Rail Trails"
DESCRIPTION:On Sept. 27\, retired Lincoln Lab AI researcher Terry Gleason will talk about his passion\, bicycling\, as part of his presentation\, “Rails to Trails: How Bedford and Regional Railroad Lines Became Today’s Rail Trails.” \nBicycling on the area’s rail trails wasn’t always possible; abandoned railroad beds sat dormant until the State and local communities converted them into walking and biking trails. Gleason will describe the peak of railroad activity in the region\, its decline\, and the conversion of the abandoned lines into rail trails. His story features interesting twists and turns\, with Bedford’s own rail trail history exemplifying those surprising changes. \nGleason’s interest in railroads and rail trails stems from his long-standing concern for the environment and the world his grandchildren will inherit. A 42-year Bedford resident\, he curated an exhibit hosted at the Bedford Library in 2008 titled “Bedford Rails and Trails\, 150 Years.”

SUMMARY:Athlete Harry “Bucky” Lew: The first Black professional in Basketball
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, October 1\, 2026\, at 6 p.m.\, the Fitchburg Historical Society will host a talk by Lowell author Chris Boucher\, discussing his latest book\, Harry “Bucky” Lew\, A Biography of Basketball’s First Black Professional. Boucher examines Lew’s story and impact in the world of sports\, in his book and during his appearance at the Fitchburg Historical Society. The talk is free and open to the public. \nThough he grew up in Lowell\, Harry “Bucky” Lew’s family had Fitchburg ties: his wife Florence Genevieve Smith Lew grew up in Fitchburg and was the daughter of Emma Loisa Treadwell Smith and Isaac Smith. Her father\, Isaac\, had escaped from enslavement in Louisiana in 1862\, then served in the Army and eventually settled on Summer Street in Fitchburg. Bucky Lew may have met his wife at the Fitchburg Armory\, a building that still stands\, and serves as the Fitchburg Senior Center. It’s not known whether they met when he was in town to play basketball or when he was playing the violin\, another of his skills. Maybe\, since in those days\, promoters often combined basketball games and dances\, it was both! \nIn 1902\, Harry “Bucky” Lew became basketball’s first Black professional when he signed with the New England League\, the start of a 25-year\, history-making career. Lew achieved milestone after milestone and Fitchburg was there to support them all. The city hosted Lew when he brought his independent teams here as early as 1906; Fitchburg had a team in the Massachusetts League when Lew made more history as a franchise owner\, and Fitchburg State was Lew’s first opponent when he coached for what is now UMass Lowell. \nAuthor Chris Boucher is based in Lowell\, Massachusetts\, and was named a Distinguished Scholar in 2021 by Southern New Hampshire University\, where he received his M.A. in Creative Writing. He is also a graduate of University of Massachusetts\, Lowell. Boucher will be selling and signing copies of his book at the event. His website is:  https://chrisboucher.net. \nThe Fitchburg Historical Society is located at 781 Main Street\, Fitchburg\, in the Phoenix Building. For more information\, visit www.fitchburghistoricalsociety.com\, call 978-345-1157 or email director@fitchburghistoricalsociety.org. The event is free and there is plenty of free\, on street parking.
